Hey i was just wanting to know what the temp is where your cpu starts to get damaged i got a xp - 1800
Was playing ofp last night and i alt tabbed it and it was at 70C lolz
getting some cooling today V 7 + and a couple of tower fans and maybe some artic silver
your CPU gets damaged at any temp if it has voltage going thru it, the question is how much.
if running at say 20°C it will last about 50 years,
about 30°C will last about 20 years and so on,
you are looking at about 50°C max for a long life,
you can run it about 60°C, but anything over that is killing it.

the maximum top temperature your cpu can handle is 90c...(and thats DEATH territory) I have my computer set to shut down if the cpu hits 60c
aim for under 50c full load temp
general rule of thumb: a drop of 10c will double the theoretical life expectancy of your cpu

It should be no more than 80 degrees C.
but it shouldnt get that high in the first place

Well if it runs then it is probably still ok, although you should really try to get better cooling for it ASAP. It's total life may be a bit shorter now, but you'll probably upgrade before that comes into play...
But go get a 1337 cooler for it NOW
[edit]also forgot to ask "How much faith do you have in your temp sensor?" it may be wrong....

Yes - DO check that.
I've seen people install heat-sinks with the protective paper still over the TEC waaay too many times not to be paranoid about it! It's worth a go anyway.
In my experience, AMD stock coolers generally let your CPU get into the 60's, as they'll still last out the 1-year warranty up there. But 70's? Check the heat-sink!
That's another reason why Intel chips run cooler - they have to to get a reasonable life-span to survive the longer 3-year warranty Intel tends to give their chips ;).
Lol - the only reason I don't passively watercool ATM ( it still works ) is because I loose about 10 degrees with the fan. Doesn't give me any more MHz - but it might give me some more months....

Ohh damn i swear to god it has melted a bit lolz coz i took my old fan into the shop so they could see what size it is coz the pc company down here is retarded :D
and i looked at the cpu and around the metal bit it waz melted a bit and shiny and on the bottom of the fan there was plastic on it

Yep.... my XP1600+ has melted edges around the edges of the core going down to the main body. I don't think it would actually melt the core, even at those temps.

the new v 9 is out and not much of a price diff or even the Globalwin CAK4-88T or CAK4-86. i dont know how good all these coolers are but they look good, all kindo the same as v7ns ect, go to ocnz or stylespc.co.nz they stock the new cooler check some reviews out, the v7 can get noisy, maby try that zelman hratsynk there quiet, that woyld do if you dont oc, have a look around ;D, but price often doesnt let you get what you want :(

Dude try this little app http://www.cpuidle.de/
For some reason my "cool" celeron was idle at around 70 celsius, this reduced it to 35 in a matter of seconds,if your system appears normal and nothing obviously making it hot then it can hurt to try

LMAO just noticed Method's sig :p Dont listen to me dude I am the biggest nOOb here
farns, it's says that you are a senior member, :D
i was quite suprised to see this version of cpuIdle work on my machine, but.. since the voltage drops, the fans make a different noise which I'm not use to, so it i don't like that,
Plus, I'm running Seti all the time anyway, so why bother, :D

Melted??? Are you reffering to this? Coz that material is there to assist heat transfer (or something like that if I remember right).

Mine is kinda like that but the sides are more sloped and more clearly visable....... hmm heat transfer you say.... uhh oh, I think I may have scraped off some of it when cleaning off my titan thermal grease a while back. No probs so far so I must be sweet.
