Ok my GameTheatre XP is only about 3 weeks away from arriving.
At the mo I have no decent speakers for it. So I've decided that as I am going to start LANing I would prefer to get a decent set of headphones first.
Anyone got recommendations/links. Could probably go as high as $150-$200 for a set which will last a few years and has l337 features etc...

Philips SBCHP840's

mmmm they will be mine.. oh yes.. they will be mine

the big plus for them (apart from generally kicking ass) is that the cable is detachable from the headphones themselves.. this immediately reduces the most common form of wear and tear on higher end headphones, which is the conductors where they go into the headphones. I've had to perform surgery on my headphones to fix this problem a few times now...(i've now get everything snugly encapsulated in a mix of hardened epoxy and heatshrink.. it wont break again anytime soon) so the 840's are definately a top option for me

this is from an UBER HIGH RES image of the headphones, resized for dial up sufferers... look carefully.. see where the cord goes in.. UNPLUGGABLE :D

What are the Philips ones like for positional sunds (don't know the correct term). I was looking at the Xitel Force Feedback ones but did a search on the net and it looks like they are very problematic, not to mention have been discontinued.

anything within red circles is BAD
http://www.geekflat.orcon.net.nz/images/sony.jpg

bad bad bad.. i hate dualside cabling on headphones.. its irritating and doubles the chance of stuff ups

sony: anything sony that i have owned with a value under $200 has not lasted outside 3 months regardless of how well i treat it... so i despise them.. plus they are enforcing cd copy protection crap.. how can you like them for that??? co-developers of the format and they blatently defy the redbook standard.. set out by them!!!

in saying that however, 99% of my high res photos are taken with sony digital cams, and i have a few years experience working with sony dvcam/dvcampro editing under premiere...

 OMFG!!

Dude, seriously - FORGET Dick Smith, Sony, and whatever average people use.

Find a place that sells Koss or Seinheiser phones - they're within your price range ( I reeeeaaaally want some Koss UR-30's ), and fully 0wn. Koss and Seinheiser are respected names in the music and DJing scene for a good reason - their audio reproduction isn't all marketing hype. It's solid engineering and a commitment to quality products.

D@mn, it's a shame you're in Timaru - you should road-trip up here and w[H]0r3 the ChCh Hi-Fi stores for a day - seriously, good phones will re-define what you think sounds 'good'.

www.koss.com (http://www.koss.com/)

http://www.koss.com/koss/kossweb.nsf/files/graphics/$file/UR30_lg.jpg

Trust me, after listening to those, coming home and putting on my Sony MDR-G56's ( granted, only a $40ish pair ) I nearly cried. They.... just.... sound... so... crap... now.... :(

Any stores in particular KJ? :D

Those definitely look damn nice.

Also should have mentioned that I'm trying to get a balance between quality (as in audiophile) and features (like directional sound... I heard -may have been rumour, may have been a future product- but aren't their headphones that can replicate surround sound to some extent. I see this as being extremely useful in a gaming enviroment where knowing exactly where that shot came from can mean the difference between servival and being fragged) in the headphones I get.

Forget looks - you ought to feel and listen to them...
*drools*

I first heard the Koss UR-30's ( they will be mine, oh yes - they WILL be mine... :D ) at Bob Brown's HiFi. Some of his demo stuff sucks - so take a disc yourself ( he really likes good classical songs, even if the recording is so bad you can hear the hiss, lol :p ).

There are also tons down moorhouse ave - including the evil Sony Experience store ( Out! D@mn spot! ) :D

Basically, you want to run around with a couple of good CDs - I've done it once or twice. A trace CD ( ala Gatecrasher ) and a classical CD will probably work out most things ( trace for range and treble, classical for bass ;) ).

Koss/Seinheiser phones are very comfortable to wear - you'll notice that difference instantly. They come with nice long cables, and the sound tends to give you goosebumps, hehe :D.

As for surround headphones - I don't know, but I think they're extrememly expensive ( the ones that do it properly, anyway ).

for surround just get some normal headphones and get a soundcard with either sensaura or qsound algorithms... even with eax or a3d turned off i can still position enemies VERY accurately, and have been accused of cheating a lot because of it...

Definately give Phillips/Seinheiser/whatever else a look too though. I only want the UR-30's cos I can't tell the difference between them and anything better ( ATM ;) ). Not to mention they're not an insane price.

$150ish from a HiFi store - if I every track down a wholesale stylez place for headphones, I'm sure they'd be closer to $120, and yes, then I would just HAVE to buy a pair.... :D :D

I have the Philips, stereo Headphone SBC HP140, great set of headphone, very comfortable on the ears, and good sound. Has a 2 meter long cord and come with a jack for the stereo and for the back of your sound as well. They were $35 when i bought them but now they are cheaper not sure exactly what price though.
You can also ask SerN he has the same headphones, as after I bought mine he tried mine out liked them and went and bought one.

I have the Sennheiser HD200 - nice closed back headphones.
I think they are more comfortable then the Koss fones I tried, but thats me.

Closed back means the sound isn't as good as open back - but they are more useful for me as there is no sound leakage - they are a bit like earmuffs and they cut a lot of extraneous noise, and poeple standing next to you don't have to hear your music. Good for study in library.

And they are the phatest fones I have yet seen.

Sony are rubbish. You will be throwing them in the bin within a year - as soon as their cord goes you just toss them out. Complete crap. And as the guy in the hifi store told me when Imentioned I was looking at them "The japanese can't make a good speaker or a good headphone to save themselves - buy from someone else"

I don't know what Philips are like. A lot of their stuff is junk - but keep an open mind.

I wouldn't buy any phones where the parts aren't modular - if I sit my fat arse on them I can rip out the broken bits and replace them. Even in 10 years parts will be around. Sennheiser are like that.

Take a cd around, and have a good listen, and also buy for functionality and reliability.

Good phones ( Koss, Seinheiser - anything that's pricey :D ) use significantly more effecient drivers. You'd be amazed - you can blow your eardrums out with some phones, even running off diskman's and the like.

It's all a matter of the quality of the phones. The volume, the clarity, the range, the durability.... ;)

In my experience (of Sony discmans) the amplifier they use is pretty cheap. Big phones obviously take a little bit more welly to shift them, but I can hear the amplifier start distorting and clipping with my Sennheisers at "relatively" low volumes. I just can't go loud on my discman.

A soundcard, or a component CD player is a different thing though. Too loud and you've really got to start wondering about hearing loss though.

:p Its all going to catch up when I'm fifty:p

There is only one place that sells them in Dunedin. I got them over a year ago now. Stawberry Sound - not my favourite hi-fi store here, but they are Ok. www.strawberrysound.co.nz - real average website.

They were priced at $189.95, butI had a good long yarn to the guy there, and told him that I was a poor student, and he let me get them for $150.

This other guy at the same place I spoke to the day before said about $170 for a student cash deal, but lucky for me he was away when I actually had enough money to pay for them.

These fones are some of the cheapest that Sennheiser make. They start at about $80-100 maybe, but their phones you would buy for good hi-fi are really pitched up at around the $200-$600 mark for excellent stuff. Not the cheapest stuff you can buy, but you can spend more then that too if you want lol.

From what I have heard they are in the same price bracket as Koss. So your looking at about $150+.

Have you looked at the Koss range? What were the factors that directed you to choosing the Sennheiser?

My friend bought a HP170 today, and here is what I think:

It has better surround sound than Sony MDR-P180 (which I own), but for bass Sony beat it pants down.

So for games HP170 maybe better but for music MDR-P180 wins.

HP170 cost $39 on DSE while MDR-P180 cost $44.95 on Sony's online shop.

I wonder what the difference between HP140 and HP170? Cos they cost the same!

well, this is from the headphone guide at headphone.com

If you need to block outside sounds you need a sealed headphone. Good sounding, inexpensive, sealed headphones practically don't exist. The only cheap sealed headphones that we know of that sound good are the Sennheiser HD 212 Pro and HD 202. Both these cans are darn good for the price and represent the only sub-$50 sealed cans that actually sound good to our ears. The Koss UR-20 and UR-30, and the AKG K-55 aren't too bad; the Koss sound a little muddy and boomy, but they aren't too bad for pop music

Im gonna get the Sennheiser HD212 Pro. Apparently its the best of the cheap headphones, it looks phat, and aint too expensive.

You think SONY ARE GOOD?

*giggles*

I think you'll find they're out of their league next to names like Seinheiser and Koss. I've tried plenty of Sony's ( my current pair are the $50 ish MDR-G56's ). And that's WHY I'm not considering them when I want to spend real money :D.

Lol - there's a Sony Experience store here. I've been in a couple of times, and yes - it can make you drool....

....if you know jack.

Lol, last time I went in there their 'big room' had a sub that.... um.... IMHO.... sucked.... lol, JBL's woulda eaten it for breakfast. But it looked nice, had lots of impressive numbers, and a shiny badge on the front.

I'll take quality engineering over shiny mass-production any day of the week.

Sony are a GREAT brand for those that think volume = quality, and haven't heard much finesse in a system before.
</RANT>

Can ya tell I'm not a Sony f4|\|b0y? :p
Lol - check their site out. Their biggest selling feature ( BEFORE sound quality ) is color-coordination.
ROFL.

Having said that, they do make good phones - just not generally for the price tags they attach to them. Did you manage to pull the old 'argue them down to half-price by showing them WHY they're S**T for the $$$s trick'?? ;)

Usually I would agree...Sony = Crap, cheap and nasty...Only the second piece of Sony equip I have ever owned...The rest of my HiFi gear is Denon, Linn, Infinity, and Marantz.
Looked around and listened to alot of headphones before taking the plunge on these.. (at $500 you take your time).. and for what I am doing with these..editing and mixing..I couldn't find a better pair for the price..
But then again thats just my thoughts..each to their own.

but seriously how much better could you tell they were in a noisy environment..... compared with a $200 pair ....... my guess is that a $200 pair would be better than a kick in the nuts.......

Philips make some awful stuff - some of the nastiest cheapest and ****tiest stuff I have sold has had a philips name emblazoned on the side.

Their VCRs have an enormous failure rate. Apparently one model they brought out had around 60-70% returned within 6 months. Also their stereos suck major arse, or at least all the ones that I remember do. They used to inlcude subs that would bark like dogs if you adjusted the bass level...

There widescreens are pretty good for such cheap machines though - their 32 inch models have some of the best geometary I have seen for a 'budget' TV, but apparently theres a new 32" LG...

The sound on good Sony TVs normally is a whole lot better then competitors. Also Sony VCRs, while not as reliable as Panasonic, are pretty decent in my opinion if you want something thats going to last.

The point being is that people who get all uppity about brand names, without looking at the product in question, are twits. I mean, WTF has Philips ever done for you?

Assess everything on its merits - if it sucks say so. Cheap Sony headphones can't compete, but god only knows about their high end monitoring phones - I haven't heard them. Mind you the way Sony market themselves makes me see them as wankers, but I still bought a nice Sony flat 21" for the sound - it was the best product in that catagory I could buy at the time. Afterall I bought a TV, I didn't buy identity with the product.

Tom, while I think he's a bit of a twit, had an interesting 'second hand smoke' about this a month ago.

Hmmmm.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sorry about that rant - butr I've sold electronics goods for too long now. Don't be offended :p - I tend to get a bit overexcited sometimes

Tru dat.

That's why my headphone budget is around $150. Cos my gammy ears can't tell the difference between models past that ( so it's a waste of money to spend any more ).

Scorched, I didn't find that model on Sony's site ( they seem to think that curvy behind-the-head sports phones are all we care about - which is probably true for their average customer ) - it sounds like their engineers get to decide the products at that end of the spectrum ( their marketing department obviously make the decisions on their cheaper models ).

Shame though - even if they are good, they're way out of my price league :(. ( and my ear league, lol )

you make some good points, understand that i personally dont immediately go for philips, i do research and shop around.

what has philips done for me?
*provided hardy reliable products, i'm no philips whore but looking around my room i see the following:
philips AE
3x philips 17inch monitors (two of which are borrowed)
- addon philips multimedia base for the monitor that is mine
philips cellphone (i didnt choose it.. it was a free gift)
philips hifi
philips hp120 headphones

*provided next-day support from america for my soundcard, provided regular driver updates for my soundcard. (i still maintain my challenge to any other soundcard manufacturer to do the same, especially creative)

*provided a replacement remote control for my 9 year old hifi for the cost of postage (they threw in free batteries too), and sourced a couple of replacement parts from belgium for said hifi.

what have sony done for me?

*had a playstation go up in smoke after 3 months of use (it was a demo model, one of the first in the country - i worked for united video, regardless it should NOT have started smoking after 3 months of gentle use and handling)

*i once had a decent pair of sony headphones that died after that magical 3 month time period. I have had my hp120's for 4-5 years now, they started stuffing up early this year but at least it was fixable (took all of 5 minutes of soldering and heatshrinking)

*overpriced all their products for what they are.. i really like sony professional (eg broadcast) end dv cam and editing gear... i really dislike the horrid pricing that sony gives said products

but who's keeping track ;) (btw i treat my electronics no differently based on brand, only on age.. if its new i treat it with respect etc)

as an end user who bothers to contact philips directly, i have had a great experience with them. you as a seller however would have a different experience (eg dealing with people who return products) and different opinion based on that

Whetu,

I also quite like the sony DV stuff. Their Zeiss lense range is quite good, but memory stick isn't too hot for what you pay.

A friend of mine gets to do all his stuff with the DCR-2000 which is very, very nice for a handycam. Last year he was playing with some of full BetaCams or whatnot for a few months . Mind you a camera is only a camera, but he also had dollys and booms and stacks of lights...

Mind you, I'm a punk with a capture card and a chip on my shoulder ;) I did my first lot of shooting in VHSC and I don't regret it one bit:D
