hey ho, tis good to be back- they should really turn that sun-sky mod into a gameboyadvance peripheral...
but anyway.

just yesterday i bought a non backlit dse 2x16 lcd and wired her up par the oc.au lcd guide- since i have the same lcd as in that guide.

i hooked er up to the parralel port thingee and up to the 5volt rail, turn er on and get the first row of blocks, this is good so far- now i just need some software.

this sucks.

i have now gone through over 8 differant programs including lcdsmartie 5.0, lcdriver 1.0, tryed the portIO95nt thing, still nothing from either program.

i hear lcdcenter 2.0 roXXors for this certain lcd, however it is now unsupported by the site and you cant download it anywhere.

as far as i know i have everything wired up correctly, can anyone tell me whats wrong?, does anyone have lcdcenter 2.0 that they can send me?

cheers

from memory the portio95 thing is a dll file that you need for the hardware to interface. Then you run the software, lcdcenter, lcdsmartie.. whatever.. make sure you set the controller to "HDxxx or compatible"

there should be no reason for the software to not work... if it doesnt work, I would assume you stuffed up somewhere in the wiring...

knowing me its prolly my wireing (doh), is it possible to turn one wired to a parallell to wire it to a serial? or usb even?
or have i once again stuffed er over?

On a 16x2 you should see both horizontal lines flash (solid block) on boot up.

Check your wiring (very carefully).

I use Crystal Font's "Crystal Control Center", www.crystalfontz.com

Parallel is by far the easiest way to wire your LCD, but assumes you have a parallel port. :)

ok- if i hook er up to the 12v, i get both lines black boxes for each character, so im now assuming to run it on 12v instead.
yes it is on parralell- is thier anyway to tell i have got it wired up properly- ie all bars lighting up?

ok
i got crystalcontrol
set it to hd47080 or whatever generic, 16x2 port 268
i hit the test screen and i get a series of flashes on the lcd, good im thinking.
so i save it and set a scrolling message of "p01s0n_p1e"
the lcd just flashes the blocks again..:(
anything ive done wrong?

Running it at 12v will most likely fry it (been there, done that).

My first thought when I read your second post was that you should resolder all of the connections from scratch (slowly), but I think it's b0rked dude.

:(

Aye you've fried it with the 12v dude. I got the same LCD a couple of weeks back to play with and the test pattern of one row of solid blocks is correct.

The portNT/95 thing is needed for any windows os' that don't allow direct control of the parallel port ie all except 98 i think (As i understand it)

I'm using LCD smartie with it and its been going fine for a week or 2 since i mounted it in my case. One of my mates had the backlit version which he accidently hooked to the 12V line... the backlight turned orange and thats about all it does now even after disconnecting very quickly.

12V in to a 5V device = errr no sorry :p

if its not broke, u using win2k? if so, win2k locks the parallel port from all but printer, u will need to have that portio dll installed 4 it to work...

if your wireing is spot on then maybe it is broke :(

You got it from DSE, just take it back and get a refund (might not even need the receipt).

Then you can give me the $10 you owe me ....

P.s. No, I haven't forgotten.

of course they will.. how else will they know that you've actually wired it up and it subsequently discovered that it doesnt work?

the solder on the joins is perfect evidence that you've wired it up and it doesnt work.. i've had one die on me and i took it in and the guy looked at it and said "what was wrong with it" and i explained the problem and he gave me a new one.

the problem was this: wired it up correctly but instead of getting the test signal of blocks i got a test signal of erratic lines. data could still get through but it was displayed all garbled.

i hate atm's

actually thats what did happen... i basically grew up with a soldering iron in my hand... there's NO chance in hell that it was a stuff up on my part, it was a faulty part, it was replaced, end of story ;)

Heh the anz atm's let u take out $10 notes, anyhoo.
sounds like you forked your lcd, and my guess is that it was fine b4 but yo9u didnt set up the programs right. I had an a$$ of a job setting up my dse 2x16 but now its all good, i would recommend using mbm5 and lcdcentre2.0.
Good luck. :)
