He's right, you havn't shown us which auction..
Practically any drive over afew gig in size is fine for XP, You need to make sure your mobo will boot off of a SCSI or SATA HDD if you are looking at a drive of that persuasion.. however most should be fine.
Buy a 7200RPM drive not a 5200RPM drive too btw (If you're picking up something PATA (IDE))
If you were in need of super quick help without anyone knowing what you were actually bidding on beyond the fact that we assume it is a HDD, then I hope I helped.

Damnit you beat me to the post :)
You can install XP on that HDD fine however you should know, that HDD will only run at 5200RPM, 7200 is better but its far from essential.

I'm just going to install xp, backup my other hd, reformat it, install winxp on that, and chuck the small one in my mothers pc.
How did you find out the rpm speed ?

Because at that small size HDD, it is usually got o be 5400rpm. The old generation HDD are rather small and the speed are slower....

no. Age is mostly the detirmining factor, and also the quality, raptors anyone?
# Formatted Capacity: 17.2GB
# Interface: EIDE
# Data Transfer Rates: 66MB/s (UATA)
# Physical Pins of Data Connector: 40pins
# Average Access Times: 9ms
# Buffer Size: 512K
# Rotational Speed: 5400rpm
# Height(inch/mm): LP (1.0/25.4)
Well, I myself wouldnt put windows on such a slow drive (pagefiles / programs etc) make sure you have them sitting on another drive as it will be a major slow down factor otherwise, and even with them on other drives its still gonna be a slowdown factor (sadly)
Personally I think you may have being better running lots of different partions on a fast drive, although I'am not questioning your choice, but that drive is just not fast Trust me.
have fun
