some friends and I are loking at organising a Lan in my local, church.

not exactly sure of dates yet (probably near the end of this school term or beginning of the holidays). entry would be about $10-$20 just to cover costs.

so can i get an idea of anyone interested in coming (just so we can plan whether we actually go ahead with it)

i forgot to mention it would be a 2 day event. which wold limit us to either a long weekend this term or as i said the beginning of the next holidays (for obvious reasons, its a church people...think :p)

not yet i will get together with the others who are helping organise it and have another talk, we are contacting the church "owners" in the next couple of nights to organise hall hire, so it is possible that it may be shifted if the hall is either a) to expensive or b) not avaliable

whitby? got an arm and a leg?

I was looking at running a lan in Petone at the Weltec campus.. now that I'm working weekends though I've mothballed it.. I guess with some help it could be pulled off though.. but instead of monthly as originally planned maybe every 2-3 months

A lan at weltec would be a great idea :)

I would assume it would take a lot of the fuss of aranging setting and the like, power and so on.

I haven't tryed running a lan before but I've got more spare time than a monkey can shake a stick at so if I could help in any way drop me a PM or come find me at weltec.

that's the beauty of the idea... there's something to the tune of upwards of 3 and a half thousand (or more) pcs at the main campus... so power wont be a problem. The network is all cisco gear with gigabit backbones, so networking is not a problem (technically.. ideally some isolation from the main network is preferable but that's another story), furniture is there, monitors are there.. It's essentially plug n play..

do a search for kingjackal's rant on running a lan, it's recommended reading

That was a interesting read. Still I would be keen too offer any help.

Keep me posted about this, I'm moving to Wellington on Friday so would be keen to help out if you need it, or just showing up at the LAN :D

yes well the people who run the church are really good family friends so i am hoping for some sort of mates rates deal on the hall hire, thanks for the support adrenaline, you may find a pm sitting in your inbox a little closer to the time (which we still havnt finalised :p)

also we were thinking that since 2 of us (me and my friend) have spare computers (not really high quality enough for gaming)
we could run those as "leech servers" and fill the with all the usefull little files for the lan, but possibly keeping them seperate from the main network (ie set them up with dual network cards and 2 extremely long cables ) so anyone who wants to leech doesnt slow down the main gaming network.

I wouldnt bother with that personally, if leeching is really starting to hurt gaming performance, then pull the plug on your dc hub for a while.

It depends on the scale of your event though, gigabit is a nice thing to have if you can borrow some gear...

robert.. I know a guy who knows a guy who knows a guy ;)

actually I know a guy with some gigabit loving... of course everything you plan should have a backup plan, and he was my backup in case I was disallowed access to the polytech network
