Get your act together and start upgrading, noww.
There might be no time left :D

Life is for living. We had a near miss recently. And it was also recently reaveled; that on July 7th 1999 (Nostradamus' Armagedon date!) we also had a near miss. Why be paranoid about that.

bah, I've seen it all before, in a week or two more accurate follow up observations will show that the orbit will take it close but not actually colliding with us, if not then I'm sure we can send Bruce Willis up to take it out :D

'Bout as likely as a national govt. :D
Grrr!!

I'd say about as likely as an Alliance government.

Don't get me started on that Nostradamus rubbish..........
I forsee a new invention coming into everyday use within the next 20 years..........aren't I a genius..........everyone look at me..........I can predict the future.

Yeah, Nostradamus was not the most reliable source of imformation :D. However I only put that there as it is actually an interesting correlation (or some scientist who wishes to prove Nostradamus' authenticity :p ).

They can use the asteroid as a location to film Armageddon 2 :D

It wont hit.. Its not like Astrologists know the EXACT speed of the earth or the astroid, they will always be out by a couple of hundred meters..
times 20 years
= miss
my $0.02 anyways

It wont hit, even if it does it wont be the end of the world (maybe just invercargil ;) )

What say they predict a miss by 4km, but wait, 200m x 20 years is 4km, so maybe it will hit after all.

here's another one they recently thought up: "near miss" *laughter from audience* IT'S A NEAR HIT!!! *laughter* a collision is a near miss! *laughter* *imitates colliding planes with his hands*"boooomph" "look... they nearly missed" *laughter*
[/george carlin transcript]
Let us pray... NOT, ! :)
I think putting unnecessary fear into people is cool,
I mean, look at the hype, and there is still 20 years,
in that time, for all we know, we might end up getting wiped out by nuclear weapons from some mad country, so as far as I see, live life like you always do, as if it's the last day on earth ;)

i guess i should of tryed that brown/greeny type thing
that was sitting in the freezer then.
It's still there, so i guess i still could... but then maybe
i should leave it there for nearly 20yrs - eat it the eve
of the end of the world... yes, wot a fitting way to go out.
Sitting on the toilet with.. errr yeah
*walks to the freezer and throws it out*

anyways im sure that we will have some hell weapons by then to take care that mofo :)
but then again, in the 70's ppl predicted we would all be flying around in spaceships in the year 2k :)

Quick we better start building a nuke, a big nuke, a REALLY big nuke. But wait who could be trusted with sush a nuke. I know all the countrys in the world can each keep a peice of the nuke till it comes time to use it. But nukes are evil and we can't have them in New Zealand so we will get rid of our peice and everyone will stuff around and the world will end.

ASTROLOGISTS!?! ASTROLOGISTS?! ASTROLOGISTS?! ASTROLOGISTS!?
$#%*%^!@%^$*@#
Astrologists are those people who ask what your star sign is and say something about pluto is coming into uranus in libra or something like that, and other wishywashy tree-hugging hippy crap!
people who make scientific measurements of objects beyond the earths atmosphere are ASTRONOMERS, please note the difference.
And the reason of the difficulty in predicting where this thing will be in 2 months or even twenty years, is that the orbital path is effected by other bodies in the solar system, which in turn have their orbits effected by others, this is a common problem of dynamics which many hours of physics and maths research has gone into (go to a uni library and look up "N-body dynamics" once you start going to systems of more than 3 interacting bodies then you start getting into some funky chaos theory stuff
So while we can now make very accurate measurements of positions with modern CCDs and computerised star catalogues, it only takes alot of data on each object to be able to get an accurate description of the orbit which will be good for more than 2 or three cycles, and often it is not only the objects we can see which effect the orbit (sun, earth, jupiter etc) but things we can't see from earth: the inter-planetary dust, and other smaller rocks not seen yet. and also random events, like solar flares and coronal mass ejections(when the top layer of the sun shoots out a pile of itself) these things also peturb the system, making any predictions of long term paths of these objects hard to predict.
on a side note, I had the pleasure of meeting in person one of the leading researches in this field not long ago.
Also if you want to read a good book on it search out a copy of "Rogue Asteroids and Doomsday Comets" there is a copy in the canty uni library. It explains alot about what is predicted to happen when an impact occurs, and talks about various ways of dealing with it

lmao, thankyou varkk for saving me the trouble of an astrology rant :D

but then again, do you guys reckon that any authorities will tell ppl that some comet will actually hit the earth? unless its like couple of kms away.. i doubt that.. just imagine the global chaos it will cause :-)

I've always said fear death, nah jk
It'll never happen, It can't happen, dammit, please don't hit us Mr Asteroid.
The chance of the Asteroid hitting earth is a one in 250,00 chance

If a one mile asteroid hits gore we won't be arround to talk about it
Nah 15 years is a long time, long enough for them to work out whether on no it will hit and enough time to do something about it, if it is going to hit... Which comes back to my REALLY big nuke argument :D
Imagine if they said it was going to hit next year
