you get any software with the camera to rip the stuff off the camera......... also there isnt a setting on the camera you need to change to go from USB to firewire??
firewire came with UleadDV, ive got the cd that came with the camera but its at home.. was trying to find those drivers online (im at work)

I have just been given the same problem to solve on a Panasonic NV MX8A!
It uses a USB interface, and I can get the files of the memory chip, but not off the tape :(. I don't actually have the camera software (damn school  ) but have been playing around with the interface software, without result.

in my experience with dv capturing (with sony equipment and a canopus dvraptor), firewire was only used as a control interface for the camera.. you still had to go over an analog capture... most of our captures were done via SVHS and mastered using the canopus codec, so the output quality was very high if it had to be... (95% of the time the outputs were done to bog standard VHS anyway, so the mastering was superior to what the main audience was capable of reproducing.. which is all you need to do)
anyways.. in that setup, the firewire was only used as a control interface... you could setup a batch capture and press ok and it would control the camera via firewire and capture via svhs...
o... can u capture via the firewire tho?
my svhs capture is on a tv-tuner card, nothing professional, i have problems captureing anything over 1min long...
wowa, outta the blue it decided to work, yay :D all i did was wiggle the cable connected to teh camera... i bet it was just a lil loose

Yeah I could capture via IEEE 1394 (Firewire) if the computer had a port :p

My sony camera captures fully digitaly through the firewire connection. You shouldn't need any extra drivers to do the trick as the camera's control codes are supposed to be a standard. You certainly don't under windows xp. As long as your firewire card is working properly you should be fine.
yeh, i got it all workin now, cheers :)
