Blow? = Xtra/Telecom.
Go? = Inet, WorldNet or Orcon.

Well first of all "JetStart" does not exisit any more, It's now called "JetStream Starter" - with a 10G cap

The full speed Jetstream is insanely expensive and with tiny data caps....

Jetstart has been rebranded to Jet Stream Starter

and the obligatory inspire pimp'n

InSPire (www.inspire.net.nz) jetstart.
Get that, and get no other.
Jetstream your bills will be several $100 a month
waste of money unless you are a business ;)
jetstart is 128k, or 16kb a sec.
Kicks ass.
KJ, RB, myself and whetu's g33kflat (www.g33kflat.orcon.net.nz) are all on InSPire jetstart ;)
Tech support rocks, pings rock, and generally just a kickass service :D

actully my pings are crap (+50 more than other js users) but that's not really inspire fault :)

p01s0n_p1e, to explain WHY to get Jetstart, consider this:

1) - PINGS
I'm a gamer ( duh! Did ya notice? ) and have tried both JetStream and JetStart/JetStreamStarter/WhateverTheHellTheirPRDeptTHinksWill SellMore and for gaming you should realise that you will get EXACTLY THE SAME PINGS on either service. Thats right - if you're getting 70's ( pings my vary by a bit, you'll probably get 60's - 80's in NZ, 80's - 120's in AUS, and 200's+ in the US and Europe ) on Jetstart, you'll get 70's on JetStream. They're the same tech, so latencies are the same - it's only the bandwidth that's different.

2) - NUMBER OF HOSTS
128k is plenty for gaming. In fact, you can ( and I've done it before ) run 2 or even 3 computers of a single Jetstart - and they'll ALL get low DSL pings. Even in modern games that push a bit of data ( RTCW etc ). Of course, you won't be able to easily have 10 of you gaming over jetstart, but then that's where the bandwidth comes into play. But for anything out ATM, 3 PC's can all play simultaneously without any problems. With full Jetstream you could probably run 50 people at once without any problems if you were close to an exchange ( and got close to the full 8Mb/1Mb ).

3) - SPEED
Jetstart works out to be about 3x faster than your modem connection. So bump 5kB/s up to 15kB/s ( both roughly ). Jetstream is closer to a 10Mb LAN connection, as when you're close to an exchange, it's 8Mb downstream.

4) - SPEED, RELIABILITY
Jetstream is fast, and you'll only get all 8Mb if you're lucky enough to be practically next to an exchange. You'll likely get 1-2Mb, which is still ub3r-fast. Jetstart? EVERYONE gets 128kb, and approx. 16kB/s. EVERYONE - even in some rural area's. Because it doesn't 'use the whole pipe' so as to speak, a little noise down your line won't even slow it down. Also, not all net servers will give a JetStream user the full pipe - to stop bandwidth hogging. On the JetStart side, I haven't come across a server yet that won't give you 16kB/s....

5) - COST
JetStart - pay $60ish ( $30 Telecom, $30ish ISP ), get 10GB, go for gold. JetStream - pay $X ( only Telecom ), get YMB, be carefull. JetStream is VERY expensive. If you want to download as much as a JetStart person on JetStream ( 10GB cap ), I believe that JetStream plan will set you back approximately $1000 per month.
ROFL

In short, JetStream 0wnz,.... but it blows - so go JetStart ;).

Speaking as a Jetstream User, and Business Owner, Yeah Jetstream ROX, but megabyte caps SUCK. My isp is Ezysurf (visp = same thing), and I can sometimes get great rates (relatively close to the exchange). Sometimes over 3mbps. thats megaBITS per sec, not bytes though. But 600meg download caps on my account mean I gotta be careful.
Compare this to the PREVIOUS situation though: Sure I had a $25 all-you-can-eat dialup account, but as a business customer, TeleSCUM were charging me business line per-minute charges, and my Phonebill was over $300/month in just per minute charges, so Jetstream saves me money.

You lucky B'Stard. :p

Slightly off topic, I found out recently that Telecom only agree to maintain their Lines to be capable of 14.4k. How 1989 is that?

i can guess!
the fact you are on the worlds most unstable clear 56k connection, with a winmodem, on one helluva noisy line and about 10km from the nearest exchange?

would that have anything to do with it?

NNA2m
25-07-2002, 09:49 PM
:P

Its not that unstable... Now that I'm connecting at 31,200. :D

just seen it? you just drove past and didnt come visit?
*thinks*
hmmm i have a friend who calls me on my cellphone from the front door cos none of us can hear someone knocking on the door... we are always cranking music... as for what goes on.. here's a summary:

Tijs: Whilst not preoccupied with his gf, Tijs is always reading about cooling, overclocking, and forum whoring all over the place... he also spends a lot of time emailing customers etc and does the odd waterblock on his equipment here.

looking at the logs, the last thing tijs was looking at was a demo at ati.com

Steve: apart from empirequest (which he is an insane addict to) and his many irc chans (he is an irc whore to my annoyance as irc brings most of our security breach attempts) anyways.. apart from that, what steve looks at is disturbing. Here's a hint: teen, farm animals, bondage. He gets on with shag really well when we let shag out of his cage. When steve is not at his computer, we wanders around aimlessly, mumbling various crap and stating his opinion about the stupidest things. He also habitually walks to the fridge.

last thing steve looked at: empirequest.com surprise surprise

Kris: kris is addicted to rock.. metallica, RHCP, papa roach etc, and he plays it loud, even when he leaves the house.. its not uncommon to be doing dishes and having to go into his room and turning off the stereo. (I would kick the stereo but it's Tijs' stereo so I wont) So kris is always looking at rock sites. He also has some insane fetish with wanting to hack into people's computers, so he's commonly looking at online hacking resources etc (to date he has not been able to hack into my computer :D)

as he has only just arrived home from work we can see what he habitually browses to: x-cite.co.nz (to txt his friends) programmersheaven.com and I also see several instances of ads coming through, as well as a visit to realmedia.com.... oh great.. more spyware on my network to deal to

errrrr... kind of off topic :o sooo....

DSL -
xtra - SUCK SUCK SUCK AVOID! 5gig cap, sh*tty helpdesk, blameshifters ("your line is at fault, call telecom" 99% of the time it is THEM at fault) xtra should die. die die die.

inspire - best bang for the buck, for gamers and download whores

ihug - reliable and one of the first to announce sticking with a 10gig cap... ihug's not going anywhere (by this I mean they wont flop anytime soon) performance with ihug is dependant on how much effort you want to put in... you'll get satisfactory performance by default, but you can tweak things (manual proxy settings etc) and get better performance out of them

Others - either they suck so bad that i'll end up ranting too long, or I havent been able to form an opinion on them.

dah! waht I mean is, the exchange is 6 blocks away and I still get crappy (for dsl) pings!

aannd
jetstart ping = 50 (rocket arena 3)
cable ping = 20 now that is a huge difference, trust me.

Yeah but it's 1GB on traffic, I poo on that. Are you on that??

Joshsti_NZ
26-07-2002, 11:10 PM
Does it have a 1G cap?

Now that blows, hell I'm still stuck on my 56K/Xtra connection .. I'm sure I pass more than 3G a month at least, and being on 512K cable i could use that up in less than a day .. does anyone know of a program that logs how much band width your 56K has used?
