Ok looking to update my server

If you had $500 to spend what would you do ?

It is:
CPU 1.1GHz Duron
RAM: 256 DDR 300 (pc 2700)
MOBO: Systemboard M825
Power supply: 200W icute
HDD’s: total 1/2TB (some WD and Samsung)
Case: Icute
Video card: GF2 64ram
O.S. XP pro

Main use file server and would like to use it for LAN game server. I’m going 1GB LAN at the end of the year

(full 64bit system then on my good rig)

what I’m looking at (in the next 8+ weeks as my bank stuff up atm) is to put more ram (another 512 of PC2700) and a XP1800 (or about)
or what ever you think may be the way to go :p

it runs about 24/7

That iCute PSU could be a worry. I put one of their 320W jobbies in the bin this week. It was about 2 years old. I'll never have another.

i'm looking at putting Linux on but bue to a time crush atm i can not as not every one @ home can use windows fully so linux may be a bit on the hard side :p

no but that is on the books Red Hat 8-9 i have the disk sitting here :D

i'm looking more on the hardware side atm

and yes i would love one of them cases but i will have a old one at the end of the year when i move to a BTX system + i can mod the Icute if and when i get time to play

*thinks about putting lots and lots of fans in + window and other stuff*

I would get a better PSU,
then add more RAM, probably add another stick of 512MB.

I wouldn't bother updating the CPU, the 1.1 is alright for what it has to do. You are better of saving the money for something else later on.

Maybe look at getting some SCSI goodness?? :)

yeah another 512MB, but skip the XP1800+... i'd save a few bucks and just chuck an applebred duron in there and clock that mutha up to 2.2GHz. should serve your game serving needs.

what that man said
a) get a better psu, enermax 300w is only what $80?
b) if you get a new board, get a VIA, a little slower but alot less picky about ram

but from what i have seen the non NF2 mobos cant dish out the work load verey well :confused:

Almost sounds like an upgrade for the sake of an upgrade, rather than a need for one ;)

As a fileserver, it should be almost perfect (ignoring HD speed). Though I guess as a LANM game server, RAM is sometimes an issue if you're having a larger LAN (more than 6 players, depending on game).

:o well i'm a overclocker so pointless upgrads are good cos i get more new stuff

let me put it this way ;)

new gear = new stuff
new stuff = play time
play time = overcloacking

overcloacking + playing with setup = new gear working better

gear working better than befor + new stuff = 1337

so to recap ;) new stuff = 1337 :D

spending $$ works like this :)

C= computers $$
A= car $$
F= fun $$
T = total play $$

T/4 = 2A+C+F

now i'm just trying ot get the hell out of doing stuff for uni :(

but yes it is just buying stuff for buying stuff ;) but dont tell any one ay

dish out the workload? you mean the chipset sometimes sends the commands to the toaster to be processed?

????

sure the via boards dont seem to overclock as well as some of the stellar NF2 boards, but you get a hell of alot more predictable results from them, not to mention they are a hell of a lot less picky about memory

I origially had high hope for the NF2, but instead it drove me to intel.. which has turned out to be a similar kettle full of different coloured fish
