Yep.. that's the model
"3Com HomeConnect ADSL Modem Ethernet" or the exact model number: 3CP3647-RHY

Problem: After an initial trouble period of not being able to access it via telnet due to lack of information provided by the previous owner, I was eventually able to hack it and get it back to default and start from scratch. I have it pretty much figured apart from one thing:

how the errrr... heck... does it handle ISP authentication?
eg where do i put in geekflat.dsl@inspire.net.nz with the password of "whetuislongandstrong" etc

from what I can see there is nothing in its internal configuration that handles it.. and there is absolutely nothing in any related software (both the provided cd and downloaded) that handles it...

3Com documentation is VERY vague, and after 3 hours of google I'm none the wiser...

This modem certainly has been a challenge

yes i have been to nzdsl.co.nz and unixathome.org/dsl (which in my opinion is ub3r clumsy and annoying to browse)

anyone got one? anyone know someone who has one? anyone able to guess something I havent guessed?

cheers guys

oh yeah.. its an external modem, and connects via ethernet or serial (serial is for hyperterminal config)

Hey dunno if this might help - but i got the 3com Dual-link (same as your one but with a USB port) and most of the ISP config can be done via the browser http://192.168.157.100

Or u could always run a port scan if tis diff.

I also use RASPPP (http://user.cs.tu-berlin.de/~normanb/) as my dialer - awesome stuff.

similar but not quite the same sadly :( Do a search for 3com homeconnect in google, and about 80% of it will reference to the dual link model... all the rest will be either the homeconnect usb, or the homeconnect hub/switch family... only a few are relevant to the ethernet model :(

it doesnt have browser based management.. all done via telnet

installing rasppp at the mo.. cheers for that :D

hopefully u should be able to use the services previously installed on the modem - VCI/VPI setting is the same across NZ as far as i know. By the way don't forget the 3com patch :D

yep.. i figured out the 3com patch :D

doesnt seem to work sadly.. I'll give it another shot after work tonite...

and yes I'm aware of all the settings required to hook up to the network ( www.telepermit.co.nz/adslmodemsetup.html ):D

on the positive side.. after a night of frustration trying to get it connect the dsl network, i changed the line cable going to the modem and voila... 2 seconds later the dsl light changed from red to green.... *eye twitches in frustration*

still cant get any connectivity over it though (as we arent yet lined up with an isp, and dont yet know how to make the modem authenticate with that info)

I think you need to setup a third party dailer in windows to access the net....... at least thats what I needed to do with a dual link on I used for a bit ( 1 hour) to see if it was any good........

...which is of no use to us as we will be connecting through a firewall/routing box... I have no idea how smoothwall is going to handle it... maybe time to hax teh lunix! by this I mean write and upload a connection script

I think perhaps use a windows dialler to get it to dial in, then just plug the lan cable from the modem straight into the red interface of smoothwall... may work...

Anyways.. I've thrown together a test smoothwall box so once we get some connection details from our ISP we can give it a shot

always on would be wikkid.. but again 3com have been ub3r vague :(
