With a bit of luck we should soon be seeing the first DVD drives with a Serial ATA interface

As far as I can tell the SATA interface has no impact what-so-ever on performance - it just looks cooler.
Even the most modern mobo chipsets only have support for two Serial ATA drives built in, any extra SATA ports are off a bridge. With a bit of luck we will start to see chipsets with 4 or even 8 SATA ports built right into the hardware now that there are devices to make use of that number of connections.
And those cables look so cool!
Edit: available to OEM's "real soon", should be available for consumers in 3 to 6 months - just enough time for AMD to release their socket 939 processors and some bugger to make a socket 939 board with 4+ SATA ports and PCI express slots on it.
