View Full Version : Q about V7+

just got my V7+, **** its heavy... more so then i thought, must be close to about 800g... anyway, the wireing on it...

fan has black and red going to one plug and yellow to another, my q is "is the yellow wire for the temp sensor or somethin?"

also, coming out of the speed control piece is a socket that the red/black runs into, but there is also another socket with yellow wire, whats this one for?

another quicky: when i placed it on my cpu (after adding the thermal greese that came with it) it seemed to be on an angle, i had a look down the side and it WAS on an angle... did i do it wrong? i couldnt straighten it up...

The yellow plug is for RPM sensing - plug it into the header on your mobo and it gives you fan readout. I'm not sure why it has two plugs, it seems very redundant...

As for the thing not being straight - what do you mean? Is the base flat? Is it FLAT - bottom surface parrallel to the motherboard? If its seated properly then the bottom will be parrallell to the mobo.

Maybe the shroud you screwed on on top is out of alignment - this wont matter a damn, but if the base is mounted screwey then you may have crushed a core (or be about to). I hope you used a shim.

I also have this extra wire and wouldnt have a clue what it does.. had a look at the wiring diagrams on TT's site and a few other reviews of the hsf and never seen one with it. That should be the only spare wire though, bascially from what I can remember from mine at home theres 2 connectors from the HSF, one going to the switch (red and black) witch then passes through to the molex connector, the other one on the HSF is to plug into a Motherboard header so you can read the fan speeds.

Word of caution tho, mount or be careful with the switch, the red wire on one side of my switch popped out when i was moving some cables, so I had to pull the switch apart and solder it back on, now the other side has popped off so Im a bit sick of it. Also makes me a bit paranoid that my fan could stop at any moment with interesting results...

no shim, is it NEEDED?
hope i didnt crush the core... the cpu didnt work, so i tried my old cpu, attached the hsf the same way, it worked... i didnt check the alignment tho

yeh, it wasnt parallel with the mobo

i havnt had probs with my switch yet, tho i havnt really used it yet :)

I think you've pooted the cpu. If it didnt work, that might mean you crushed the core. Look at the core and see if it is cracked or whatever.

it doesnt look cracked from quick inspection, but i noticed after attempting to turn comp on, there was a brown residue in one corner mixed in with the thermal grease...

should i get a shim? i had no problems or damage to my old cpu (removed and replaced the hsf 2-3 times on the old cpu)

Buy a shim, and hope the chip boots agin when you try it.

I hope it was an old Duron 600 you were trying it on, b/c it sounds like you might have ****ed it...

guess what, it was brand new and i never saw it POST :(

Well, your ****ed then :)

Bummer, add another casualty to the growing list... Bring on the integrated heatspreaders i say. I hate shims, then again I have never crushed a core... They are not neccessory, but useful if you are inexperienced.

i took the cpu back, they rekon they can get it replaced, it wasnt cracked it had over heated, so maybe it was given to me like that OR my incorrectly installed hsf (it was on a slight angle) had not cooled the cpu and cause the cpu to fry...

ive never fried a CPU b4, but ive fried IC's b4, normaly there is a snap, bang or pop and a bit of smoke, and a distinct smell, i noticed none of the above however there was slight smell of burnt IC... if u fry your cpu does it pop at all?

damn jeff.. u fried it!

hehe don't worry. there is a reason behind my "Palomino Cooker" title..

for athlons (TB or XP) the fry is almost instant. and usually leaves you with a bad smell of burning thermal grease.
i thought you have an Asus A7V333? wonder whats up with its thermal protection feature..

but really, don't sweat.. frying athlons are just normal step towards the ultimate OVERCLOCKER :-)

yep it was in the a7v333 and i duno what happin to the thermal protection diode, it was the first thought to cross my mind when it didnt start...

Well it is asus ;)

Ive never fired anything before, allthough I did discover that my mate had a passive cooler on his P3 733 from PC company... Toasty :D

Grrr!!

A passive cooler on a PIII? That is stupid. I didn't think an OEM would do that!

jeef

whats a passive cooler? just a heatsink?

Grrr!!
23-07-2002, 04:26 PM
A passive cooler is a cooling solution which doesn't move; generally a heatsink.

o, cant imagine that workin for anyone in these forums :)

I assume that'd run damn hot under load!

i have a mobo and cpu where the cpu has only a heatsink... but it only runs at 120mhz... :D

Grrr!!

Good old Pentium processor aye.

My 75 is currently running without even a heatsink :D.

hehe, thats funny :)
nowdays, cpus will last not long at all without a heatsink and fan... :)

dont feel bad about frying your core- ive done a crap load of crazy **** and gotten away with it most of the time...
like the time my 6cu+'s fan was ****ing over- but i didnt know- suddenly my pc rebooted and went to the bios- the air coming out of my case was melting wires (ok maybe not..) but anyway- so i jump around the bios, when i come to the temp monitor- 78*c!!! so i touch the heatsink to make sure my asus aint bull****tin- and i singed my ****ing finger, i was dancin around for like 5r minutes with my finger in my mouth!

moral of the story, celerons last a good 3 hours on passive cooling and an amd totally blows ass :)

haha, ouch, yeh, smell test b4 touch test eh :)
ive seen the vid at toms hardware, didnt the amd cpu get to ~300C when the heatsink was removed??

Same thing happened to me, I had a MSI KT266A and a XP 1600 and put my Globalwin HSF on, didnt check the angle, and bingoooo cpu did not work anymore.

But luckly got replaced with a 1700+, but then got sold 2 weeks later anyway and replaced with a P4. :)

ok, i found out y the hsf was on an angle, when i recieved the v7+ it was in pieces so it could be assembled to fit p4 of amd, there was no instructions for assembly, only mounting, so i assembled it and i believe i did it right all but for one detail, the clip piece looks lie a wide "V" and the bottom is off center, i had the clip around the wrong way so that the bottom of the "V" was over the side of the core, more towards the fat edgs of the cpu-socket... turned it around and the bottom of the "V" now lines up with the core... keep that in mind for next time :)

Yeah I had incorrectly placed my v7+ on last time I had done a reapply of as3 (replace 'placed' with 'upside down' ). Sydog may remember me telling him this (for those of you who don't believe me :p)

I was so surprised my core didn't fry as it was on an angle which made it loose as. All I had to do was tap the v7+ and my pc hardlocked. My temps were only about 5C higher than norm so it must have been just touching. I had it on like that for about 2 hours I think it was before I noticed the Tt grill upside down.

my duron runs without any heatsink at all! :) ok its posts @ 500mhz 1.3v, but close enough
