I had a HP8110i 4x2x24 writer until recently (bought for $700 about 5 years ago) and always burnt at 4x, but now that 40x12x48 are only $160 I got a new one (Aopen 40x12x48).
I expected fast writing speeds, but it seems it really depends on the disks. The 24x disks I have been using seem to burn at 12x with the Aopen Justspeed technology (Cheapo Transonic Warehouse ones as I'm all out of my Acer Gold).
Justspeed = write some data and then determine the optimum writing speed.
So as yet I haven't tried any faster disks, but what do most people write their disks at? And what brand of didks?
For JustSpeed to work optimally, the RW's BIOS must recongise the media itself, i.e. writing strategy for a particular media. If the drive doesn't recongise a media or it's not in BIOS's databased, justspeed may downgrade the speed setting.
BTW, DSE has some 40X media on sale now, $22 for 25 CDs. A pretty good value I recon.

verbatims rated to 24x, burn both audio and data at 32x mint,
which is as fast as my ASUS can burn

I have a 40X Aopen drive I got a week or 2 ago, I have only so far used the Melody 40X media in it, it has burnt at 40X each time without any problems.

The ones you got from the warehouse, are they the TKD ones? If so I just had a couple of those burning off at 40x.
The other brand I'd recommend is Melody, you can get 40x packs from DSE pretty cheap (don't ask me how much exactly as the two packs of 10 I got at the cheaper price of the 24x because they couldn't find a price of the 40x :D).
Have you looked into flashing your rom as there could be an update on compatable media. Also if you really have a need for speed you might be able to OC your drive to a 48*12*48. I'm looking into it for my LiteOn 40125s.

i bought a spindle of them, they are called 'elite data' and i was kinda pissed off cuz they can only burn at 24x (well, thats what it seems to be at max =/ ) and not the 40x that its sposed to be able to (i only have a 32x writer tho)
as my writer is kinda new i wanted to test out burning at 32x, but nero says that the cds max burning speed is 24x
Haven't tried anything > 20X, coz my RW is getting old now.
U can bring the rest of the CD-Rs back to DSE and ask for a refund.

That is what to do at the Warehouse. I didn't realise that DSE was that stupid too.

I use 16x magmedia discs from warehouse stationary .... burnt over 110 so far @24x (liteon 24102B) with only 2 coasters both cos I tried to put to much data on them......

Has anyone tryed those Dorado disks from Warehouse Stationary yet. 10 disk spindle for only $9. Thought about getting some but they look "cheap n nasty".
BTW I flashed my drive last night. So instead of the 40125s I did have I now have a 48125w :D
Just looking for some files to burn so I can test the performance increase. Does anyone know of any benchmark/testing/etc programs for CDRW's?
There is a thread over on the CD Freaks forum at the moment on good media that'll do 48x. Will let you guys know if any of the ones they mention are available here.

Good to read that you didn't stuff your burner.
Harvey Norman had traxmedia (i think) at $4.95 for a spindle of $10 the other week.
2 much thinking

yeah those traxdata's were good while the special lasted,
i use imation 32x (10 4 $10 @ dragon if u ask nicely :D) or the melody's from DSE also 10 4 $10, (but the imations come with slim cases)
im considering getting one of the Aopen's also, very cheap at only $160. have u ever had justlink stop a recording and start again?? im pretty sceptical about this cause 99.99% of the time i never have a problem and even then, does it do a good job of starting and then completing the recording

Yeah, I haven't had a chance to put it through it's paces but all seems well. I actually have the choice of 3 48x firmwares, which is why I need a program that can truely test the drive to it's limits. That way I'll be able to tell which is best. At the moment I have VS06, but a lot of the guys over at OC-Freaks seem to prefer VS02.

I used 5 of those Dorado disks at school yesterday. IMHO - Cheap and Cheerful.

Some of you guys like varkk say you are writint at 40x, so how long does it actually take to write a CD at those speeds.
I had a 4x, and it took 16 mins for a whole 650MB cd.
So a 40x should take less than 2 mins right.
So some programs I have say they are writing at 40x with my new writer, but it still takes 10-12 mins.
Now Clonecd 4 tells you tha actual recording speed as it's writing and it varies all the time and hangs around 12x, even if you have 24x, 32x of 40x set for recording speed.
If I turn off justspeed, then yes it seems to try and write faster, but I get coasters, so I turn justspeed back on.
I'm thinking it's cheap and nasty 24x transonic disks, but 32x Imation disks don't do any better.
So how long does it take you guys to actually write CD's at different recording speeds?

your problem is that justspeed is reckognising the media as not being capable of 40x therefore it burns it at a slower speed to avoid costers ie it overrides your burning softwares setting...... as you found out it does indeed burn costers when you turn off justspeed........ solution is to just try different media until you are happy with something at 40x
10-12 minutes for a burn at 40x is just wrong and like you say that is probably at 8 times or something......
I use a 24x liteon and a burn takes 4.5 minutes at 24x using 16x media

Ok, I found the problem, I went out to get some melody 40x disks seeing varrk has the same writer, and uses those cd at 40x with no problems. But still I could only write 12x.
So I checked the PIO/DMA mode, and it was on PIO from ages ago when I was formatting an old 300 MB drive. So now it's on DMA mode 2 and has no problems writing at 40x.
Also upgraded the firmware after I found that cause new one was 2 versions later and supported more media.
BTW, the POS Transonic 24x will still only do 12x, so it's the last time I ever get those pink PsOS.
