Hey does anyone know where one can get a small form factor CDROM drive (as found in notebooks, slim servers) that uses standard IDE connections?

I am seeking a notebook style drive I can connect to a standard IDE system for an in - car MP3 player...

Grrr!!

I don't think there are many out there. However, you can purchase an adapter for about $20 (edit: from trademe), which works fine with the laptop/sff drives.

Alternatively look out for SFF Compaq Deskpro EN series of the PII era. They had cdroms like this, although they were rarely installed.

i'm not aware of any slimline optical drives that have a standard 40 pin connector, however you can purchase adapters.

(about halfway down the page)

if you hunt around you might be able to find one locally, but it's probably less hassle to just buy one from somewhere like mini-itx.

44 pin is cool, the adapters are easy to get.

So most any notebook CD-ROM uses the 44-pins? Don't suppose anyone has one lying about...

I will go take a wee gander at ascent. Cheers guys.

edit: Found one, looks right nice.

notebook hard drives use 44 pin. notebook optical drives use a 50 pin centronics.
