Aucklan1 was a huge success, had a up to about 14 people playing Americas Army at one time, that was huge.
Games Played
Americas Army, played through all the maps first up and had a great time, the general census was the live bullets maps were more fun than the laser tag ones. Had few issues later on with some n00bs who could not quite get its sorted that this was not a deathmatch game.
Warcraft 3, all I will say is that w3 was 1hr 21mins of my life I will never get back. Played a 7 player with one other guy from the netcafe and he blitzed us all. It sucked, it was so boring, I spent more time watching famly guy on the PC beside me than playing (possibly that had something to do with how easly I was beaten??).
SOF2, after about 40 minutes of waiting for eveyone to get thier PC installed an running with SOF2. We played for a while, but after 10 games of running around with a sniper rifle with the scope zoomed in and shooting people I decided that SOF2 is quite possibly the worst multiplayer game I have ever played - a little realism please!
Someone told me single player sucks and multiplayer rocks, I sure hope they had it around the wrong way!
Big ups to everyone who came, and special mention to Goose for getting this going, and to Control Phreak for having a go and creating the LAN group.
Also big ups to Goose and Control Phreak for bringing in their own severs, made the games work better and faster, as with the W3 game, it was run of my desktop (p4@2.25 512mb ram) and it started to grind anytime there was big battle.
L33ching, was pretty minimal, seemed that p0rn was about the only thing there (not to complain this seemed to keep quite a few people entertained). A few game patches and Disc images created made things a little better.
The venue was great, Big ups to Richard and the guys, (one of them even pulled himself away from CS for a go at AA and seemed to like it. - I did see him running around with the m249 and shooting at people, ahhh CS you have so much to be blamed for).
Only problems were, people playing counterstrike with their frikken speakers SOOO loud you could hardly hear through your headphones. And people smoking in the room, was not particularly nice (thanks to the people in our group who had the decency to go outside for a smoke).
Thats it kids, feel free to flame away.
Where was j00 sitting again? :p

sof2 the worst multiplayer game you have ever played??
we had the beta at L3#5 and it was great fun. the full versions even better and we've been playing it a fair bit on the canterbury uni lan. sure it's no RTCW but its still dam good fun. :)

I knew they are all backwards up in Auckland.
SOF2 Multi = The most kickazz game played at L3#6
Warcraft 3 was pretty kewl, the only reason it would be crap was if you had never played a rts b4. It was the first time I played WC3 and I found it to be sweet.
CS, what the hell, utterly ridiculous.
and Swifty there wasn't a L3#5, your thinking of 4 hehe :)

Ok For starters man, Warcraft 3 owns!! You sound like you had no idea how to play the game properley and didnt even bother to learn. Lots of people were playing it L3 even if they didnt understand it they were asking questions on how to play and took the time to learn this sweet game. I also dont know how you can call it boring as there is such depth to this game.
Now brings my attention to SOF2. SOF2 is quite possibly the worst multiplayer game I have ever playe WTF are you on? SOF2 is awesome. Once again at L3 massive LAN games were played and I didnt here anyone complaining. You sound like a pathetic cs boy, I say you should go back to playing that!!!
I simpathise with you for CS up to loud, that game suxors bad, and ya should have done a speaker ban at the LAN so everyone wouldve had to resort to headphones.
Also smoking is bad too, you could have said could people please smoke outside.

Ok lets get this sorted first.
"At no time or at any time during this lan was anyone affiliated or associated by any means to OCNZ was playing CS"
It was other people in the netcafe that were play8ing it.
Jesus what do you think of us???
Warcraft3 is a f&*king great game, do not doubt that, I have played the single player through till almost the end of the undead, and I love it. I have played a few games of 1v1 and that was great, just in the context of the lan, it was boring. After about 3hrs of fast-paced AA it was slow and boring. Possibly it was from the outstart the other guy being quite obviously good at this game and pretty intent on winning, that made it suck, but with this in mind at least it made it a short game :)
Warcraft 3 was pretty kewl, the only reason it would be crap was if you had never played a rts b4. It was the first time I played WC3 and I found it to be sweet. - Sydog
Infact I have played plenty of RTS's from dune right through to w3, so I am afraid you are just plain wrong,
As for my comments on SOF2, I am a realism man, I like things to be realistic. Admitadly someday I may be able to run around with a siniper rifle with scope zommed and shoot someone in the head while stafe jumping, but untill that time I think I will stick with something a little more realistic.
Please do not take my opinon of this to represent anyone other than me.
I am sure the people who stuck around and kept playing it were enjoying them selves,
You sound like a pathetic cs boy
That hurts, it really hurts. (please refer to above anit-CS speech)
The reasons I did not enjoy SOF2 are the same reasons you will not find me ever playing CS again (beta 7 was the last time I played - do not doubt it was fun back then, but as a person I have evolved and moved on, and I am a better person for it)
Unfortunatley we were sharing the place with the usual (net/game cafe) crowd so we could not really dictate the rules to them.

Good God people.
CHILL!
Sounds like you guys had a good lan :)
Congrats :)
Also, for the little CS whinging side of things.
You people carrying on about CS being lame and pathetic, you sound just like a stereotypical CS'er.
Hell, i play CS, i enjoy it, as i am an admin and able to boot plebs off in order to make the game fun for everyone else.
So and so likes cs, u dont, big deal, no need to preach, it will fall on deaf ears.
Different strokes for different folks people.
This has been mentioned a lot more lately.....
I think we can be a bit more tolerant cant we?
Peace ;)

I agree with you SP.
I just did not want anyone diss'n the LAN over factually incorrect things.
But... what is wrong with a heated debate over this, I have strong feelings about the games I like to play, so do these guys and obviously so do you.
As long as this does not turn into petty name-calling and potty mouthed responses its all good.

Lol - nobody uses the sniper rifle zoomed in like that at L3. Lots of us can snipe somebody 50m away with the assault rifles ( the trick being in your burst lengths ), and once people get the hang of grens, snipers have a very hard time.
Warcraft III works best in teams - at L3 we were lucky enough to find the 12-player limit annoying ( there were between 14 and 18 of us wanting to play it ), so we had lots of 4v4v4 and 6v6 etc matches. That way the n00B's ( me included ) got a bit of support, and everyone lived a little longer. I'd be a LOT better competition now, but meh! Only 4 weeks to go..... :D
But yeah, things really get good when you've got enough people at a LAN to have at least 1 or 2 big ( 10+ people ) games going at once, along with the leeching.
Must organise some AA matches for the next L3 - sounds good. :)

Well the night wasn't bad at all...... AA was cool....first time I have ever played it and want some more...Warcraft....need to learn how to play the game....SOF2 was cool.......i reckon it would have been better if we had the numbers we had for AA.....and when it got boring we did visit the humourous side of it.....with knifing and pistol whipping....ask CP and Goose...it was a good laugh....pity we didn't get around to playing RTWC and MOHAA with everyone there....but overall... it was a start.. and can be made better next time around....:)

KJ, AA worked really well, after a few problems with the servers we were off and racing.
When you go to setup give me a yell, as there is quite a bit of tweaking required to get the servers up and running.
When we have 7 vs 7 on AA it was awsome worked as teams pretty well for some of it. Good to seem some quick teams working together so quickly, could possibly train these soldiers for some Flashpoint someday.
We didnt try the team play for W3, I am thinking we should for the next one, and the rest of us vs the good guy sounds fair :)

oops yea my bad sydog i was talking about #4 (i just thought the one b4 #6 hehe).
my comments were intended in good jest (hence :p and ;)), sorry if they were taken otherwise. i have no problem with CS players except when all they want to play is CS (like a small LAN i went to in Napier with some of the local polytech students), and from your first post cmdrfoo, it sounded like there were a lot of CS players who only played CS and very little else. i didn't realise it was at a Net cafe!
L3 is good, almost no CS at all ;).
Warcraft 3 is a dam good multiplayer game. it takes several games to get used to the idea of heroes in multiplayer. at first i hated the idea but then it really grew on me. now i've played it a little too much and its starting to wear a bit thin but i'm still up for the odd game :).
SOF2 was never meant to be realistic and as we all know:
realism != fun.
fun is gameplay and immersion. sometimes realism aids immersion, sometimes not.
as a side note; having played return to castle wolfenstein a bit more i'd have to say its one of the most awesome multiplayer games i've played (only with at least 6 people though). any chance of some ub3r battles at future lans? :)

it sounded like there were a lot of CS players who only played CS and very little else. i didn't realise it was at a Net cafe!
Totally my fault I should have made this clear, I am sure I did in my second post :)
realism != fun.
I'm going to have to go right ahead an disagree with you on that one.
I find realism to be most important thing in a game, that is what makes games like AA and Flashpoint so good (iMHO).
example of realism gone wrong.
SOF2 heavy machine gun, running as fast as a guy carrying a M16 and shooting while running and jumping, a real heavy maching gun would be totaly useless at this your range of fire would be huge, and you would not hit ****.
But take a look at Unreal Tournament, they had frikken lazers and acid guns, but they were not trying to be realistic.
Why would SOF2 try and make real guns work like something out of a SI-FI game?
The unfortunate side effect of this creates a group of players who when faced with a game like AA or Flashpoint charge through the lines with machine gun blaring and wonder why they hit nothing. And they they say it sucks cause they do not re-spawn.
Most games there is very little incentive not to end up dead, with a little time in games like OPF and AA you can learn to appreciate the art of staying alive as getting killed at the start of a 45minute game of OPF can really be annoying, this then gives them an incentive not to die next time.
my comments were intended in good jest
And that is how they were taken, this is not an argument, its a discussion. Not sure why eveyone is getting so defensive.

Although you don't see it, in SOF2 there are a number of factors that affect your aim. When I play I go around with either an M4 or an AK74 (is different to 47), whenever I shoot I duck and take single shots. That is why I was owning at L3

Are you SURE you want to start that game? Heh, that's about the only game I'd consider myself pretty 1337 at. Me and a medic allies, the rest of the LAN axis? :D

Yeah - you, Grevious, and a couple of other guys got that down. The AK is a lot better at range than the M16. It's just that gren launcher that makes me take the M16.... hhehee

LOL, that was probably the most fun we had with the game. We didn't have great numbers like we did with AA so we had to improvise (thats where the knives came in :D).
I enjoy realistic games like AA but its also nice to play some FPS games that are semi-realistic (ie SOF2) or pretty unrealistic (UT/Q3A)
It's a pity most people had left before we got out the RTCW and MOHAA...

**looks left and then right**
"did someone say KNIFE FIGHT?!?!" :D
I had a great time at the LAN, thanks guys for making it a success! we managed to rangle 15-20 people in two days notice, cheers for the help guys :)
...but lets not forget why we go to lans, it's not for us to get realism out of the game itself, it's to put the realism back into the game!! ...by developing ub3r 1337 team working skillz to outwit, outplay and outlast the oposing team.
Obvisously from the 'review' you can see there are lots of tricks to learn when playing multiplayer games, and as KJ and the L3 crowd know, it takes time/practice to learn those various tricks.
Well, i'm not one to dwell on the past so enough said... lets get on with organising the prospective OCNZ AuckLAN2 ;)

L33ching, was pretty minimal, seemed that p0rn was about the only thing there (not to complain this seemed to keep quite a few people entertained).
- CmdrF00
actually, i was most disappointed with the pr0n. i copied 3 CDs to my HD only to find most of it was "Bridget_Fonda_SomeMovie_BestCleavageShotEver_DivX. avi (124k)".
forgive me if i sound judgmental, but, is this the kind of thing other people like to watch? am i part of a minority which likes to see Kobe Tai being eaten out by Janine Hubermuller(sp) while being spunked on by Peter North? and a nice long clip please, ~10 minutes.
i'm not complaining. i'm just tired because i was up late sifting through my collection trying to find the "good" ones. i think there were about 5 that i actually kept. all Kobe Tai actually (yay Kobe!).
apart from that, the LAN was brilliant. as for War3, i was fine with it. i was the one watching Family Guy and Blackadder next to CmdrF00.
oh, and there's more (quotes coming):
Ok For starters man, Warcraft 3 owns!! ... I also dont know how you can call it boring as there is such depth to this game.
Now brings my attention to SOF2. ... SOF2 is awesome. ... You sound like a pathetic cs boy, I say you should go back to playing that!!!

i think it's ironic how someone proclaiming that W3 has such depth (i wouldn't dare to disagree) then goes on to sing the praises of SOF2 (fun in it's own right).
I guess all people are just the same: different.
so: OCNZ Aucklan2: when?
2 much thinking
