In Nero, I can't burn anything because my CDR device doesn't show when it asks me to choose a recorder, all I see is virtual drive.
My cdr works fine with alcohol and fireburner and I downloaded the latest drivers but still nothing.
its a CyQ've, I've never heard of it before.
I'm also on winxp if that helps.

I am experiencing the same problem with a different burning application.

I would use Nero, but when i go to install it, it tells me 'There is already a previous version of Nero on this machine, please uninstall it.' The thing is, i have uninstalled it along time ago, even with a search of 'Nero' etc, nothing relevent turns up, any suggestions?

Back to the topic, i used 'BTC's' burning software (that came with our other machines CD-RW, c. 3 yrs old) and when i go to burn, only recordable media is 'Virtual Drive'. What are we doing wrong?

Cheers

Have you installed an ASPI layer?

If its not the ASPI it sounds like you are both trying to use a version that was OEM packed with a branded drive on a different device after upgrade. IE, you buy BTC with shipped Nero and pay for the licence to use it. Trying to use it with another manufacturers drive is breach of licence :D

The drivebase they use is set to find the BTC or other model/firmware drives they are shipped with.

well I tried all kinds of aspi drivers but they didnt make a difference. I want to get normal nero working, I got a nero express cd with my computer and that doesn't work either.
whats next?
if I cant get nero working, what are some good alternatives for writing data and making audio cds?

Have you tried updating to the latest version of Nero? 5.5.10.35 or whatever it is, or 6.x if thats what you have.

Also, Nero has a drive detect thing built into it (Extras/Autodetect CDRom.) I might be wrong about that because mine is already detected and I cant click the option anymore.

If all that doesnt work, you are using an OEM that wont work with your drive although it will most often tell you. I know the AOpen and BTC versions cetainly do.

hmm, i had the same thing one time. it turned out that the version of nero i had was one revision before the one that supported my dvd burner.

something like 5.5.1.2.3.4.5.6.7.8.9.a when i needed 'b' :(

if you go to the nero website there are the latest updates for versions 4, 5, 5.5 and 6 iirc. that should hopefully do it :D

I went from v5 to v6 and now it works fine, the only thing stopping me from trying before was the 50mb download.
I almost broke my cdr yesterday tho, I left the tray open and walked into it by accident and it went all crooked so I tried to shove it back in place but I ended up pulling the whole tray out, so I tried to shove it in again and it went, works fine now.. and its just one of thos random taiwanese brands.

Slightly off topic, but about Nero OEM...
If I am licensed to use an OEM Nero for 2 different recorders that both each came with Nero, how can I use either of them? Do I have to reinstall every time I want to use the other drive? I would like to know how Nero addresses that problem. :p

Yeah the whole "this can only be used on the cd recorder it came with" thing is really gay.

I don't know whether i'm lucky or not, but i have downloaded illegal versions of Nero, and they have worked with my two drives, and also i have currently got a legal version working on both drives. The legal version came with one of my drives, so i would assume that it is drive specific.
When i installed Nero it recognised both my drives and set things accordingly.

Just got nero v6.something-or-other working, so an updated version did work.
