View Full Version : My comp loves restarting :(

I got win2k running sweet last night! Unfortunately, my original problem is still around.

Everything seems fine, except Im getting random restarts, even when not running anything heavy. Like before, if I try to install 3dmark it restarts when it gets to the textures part.

The hsf is a thermaltake volcano 7+ and it idles around 40-41, so it doesnt look like a heating problem. The new psu is a leadman 400watt, so it should have enough power.

So if its not heat or power...well I have no idea :)

asus kt333 mobo
athlon xp 1800
thermaltake volcano 7+ w/ arctic silver
leadman 400 watt psu
256mb kingmax ddr333 ram
leadtek gf4 ti 4400 vid card
19" mag monitor
40gig ide hd
ricoh cdrw

Lol.... Im having the exact same problem :( and was about to post the same qn till I saw your thread

My specs are : Soltek Drv4
Duron 1200
GF2 Ti
Win XP
320 Watt Icute P/Supply

It all started out of nowhere on Monday.

Ive tried running the min possible devices ie pretty much only the HDD and no extra fans or CDRW... even gone so far as to pull out the restart switch from the mobo in case it was that simple.

Plugged in a spare 350W power supply.. Problem went away for a day... only to return. Swapped back Icute P supply... same diff... problem went away for a day b4 returning.

On mine at least.....the CPU temp is always ~40 deg so no O/heating prob there. I cant see a short anywhere so thats not the problem either.

Once its restarted once it gets more and more frequent.

Sorry I cant be any help Felix... but your not alone ! ;)

Any more ideas anyone ??

ditto on that...has happened on both my systems (i upgraded), altho on the second its usualy just starting something that does it.....i upped the voltage to the chip and that seems to have solved everything...i hope

Hrrm. You mean the vcore voltage? I think mine is about 1.76-1.77v.

You think its worth upping that slightly? How much?

This might not solve the prob but try to turn off acpi..i have had similar probs and turning acpi seemed to fix it

just one step up...mine was 1.75 and is now 1.775

Yep same here, my temp is 29C (v7+) so I'm sweet as. I reckon it's a slightly low vcore. I get restarts when idling (mind you I am oc'ed). My new Leadman 400w (coming soon) should solve this.

Two other theroies are: Hyena 300w (of course) & my SB Live! not liking high fsb's.

XP 1600+ @ 1800+ (149fsb-1.775v)

I raised the voltage to 1.775. It seemed to be more stable. On 1.750v, it had restarted while playing a music video and while installing windows media player.

On the higher voltage I played thru several videos and installed windows media player. I then tried to install 3dmark and the bugger restarted.

Then I went to 1.800. It also restarted during 3dmark installation, and while trying to play civ3. The cpu temps thruout this stayed fine.

Is it getting into the danger zone to push the voltage any further? I would really rather not fry my cpu :)

About the acpi, theres no option for it in the bios, I found where it would have been, but it aint. This presumably means its already off?

How do you get your temp so low Antallica? Im using a v7+ as well, with arctic silver 3. Its idling 38-40 now, but one side of the case is off. If I reapplied the thermal paste I reckon it might go down 1-2 degrees, but I cant see it getting near 29.

Yep no side panel on here either..... and besides it's bloody freezing :(. Well it's probably just temp differences in out places. But I'm at 32C now. Also your 1800+ may run slightly hotter than my 1600+.

*REMEMBER* very little amount of AS3 on ur core... I have done too much so many times and it has caused me to be in your range.

As far as vcore goes..... as long as your v7+ keeps you under 50-55C (@ LOAD!! not idle... not my fav temps either, I prefer anything under 40C) then you are very safe.

*Above is a botchy job as I can't be bothered readin what I have just typed :p**

Ahem...Im pretty sure I put too much paste on, it my first time when I applied it :p It wasnt a huge amount, but more than a thin film certainly.

Meh, maybe Ill redo it this weekend. Its an annoying finicky job tho :(

To give you an idea of my *thin layer*, I can see some of the writing on the die itself (real thin eh :)). Mabye you should try something like that, but anyway have a few goes (if the 1st one doesn't tickle your fancy). I just scrape mine on with my trusty pocketknife.... well not scrape as that's just silly, more like 'carefully apply' :D.

*Note* - AS3 recommends at least 48 hours (either that or 72, I can never remember) before it is 'fully functional'.

I'm at 30C now hehe :p

run ad-aware...gator and gohip have been a problem lately.
Otherwise I'd suggest lowering the overclocking a tad.

Well I haven't had a restart at 1.775v yet, I'm unlocking soon (once I get my 400w) so we'll see what happens then.

Gah!

Increasing the voltage has definately increased stability. But, even at 1.825v I still couldnt install 3dmark. At 1.800v it also restarted during civ3.

The comp hasnt been connected to the net, so ad-aware wont help.
