-hitachi CM828 21"
-matrox G550

so after all the dicking around from sellers (reference to computer dispossals) i finally got a screen from somewhere else.

now here is the first problem: i can only get the refresh rate up to 85hz -i am currently using 1280x1024. for some reason under display properities/monitor settings etc. it has all the modes and stangely the refresh rate goes from 60hz to 85hz on all resolutions ? even 640x480! this tells me that something is wrong.

it is not the limitations of the card or the display:

i should be able to get it much higher than this.

The second problem is the slight discolouration down the right side of the screen .. slightly orangey yellow..

i have done the degauss thing. in fact it does it automatically when it turns on but it's still there. o.k it's faint and not a big deal but when you pay this much for a screen you don't expect this right? :(

i think it disappears when in safe mode but the thing is i don't work in safe mode so what good is that....

any suggestions

i have installed the driver for the monitor and the latest driver for the matrox also.

wouldn't have a clue how to do this on a g550 but on win2k (and also xp i think) unless tis the usual monitor page. anyway isn't their an option where u can force refresh... like in the attached pic?

as for your discoloration prob... 21" crt have a hell of a lot of options - my one can adjust how the r g b lines focus on edges (something along those lines)
Check your monitor setting their is bound to be a fair bit if adjusting u can do.

Sounds to me like a limitation of the monitor?

as for the discoloration.. got any speakers or sources of high magnetic output nearby? such as power transformers, psu's etc etc

ahh yes, i did just find a thing in the matrox settings that seems to let you force the refresh rate higher, i just think it should show up in the normal choice though becuase it's supposed to be supported. not too keen on the idea of forcing it but if it supports then hey? but then if it really supports is it should be a option from the main choices....

Sounds to me like a limitation of the monitor?

from hitachi site (specs for this monitor) as linked above:
"1280x1024 @105 Hz"

i will play a bit with the options.. it is the sort of thing you would expect from having speakers etc close to the display but the funny thing is i have none and it's all by itself on this table..

if u go too high your monitor should tell u so... "frequency out of range" or something. Just wait 10 sec of press ESC and u should be back to normal.

Refresh Rates
The reason it doesn't show more refresh rates is because Windows XP ( not sure about other MS OS's ) only shows refresh rates between 60Hz and 85Hz by default. It's the same with my setup. But yes, I CAN force it higher. Don't worry - it's just a default OS thing....

Discolorations
Take it back and b*tch. That is all.

so this whole *electromagnetic-**** the screen up' thing doesn't affect trinitron displays right?

trinitron is essentially no different to standard crt... just uses a different aperture grille, so yes it should still be affected by EM

i was wondering about dual monitors, having two right next to each other touching, can that cause any troubles?

Shertinly.

Yes, it can. Move them away about 10cm, and get a couple of toroids, one for each monitor. You can never have too many :)
