View Full Version : LCD Screens
Well getting one of these things, just wondering who else has one and plays the odd game on it, if so what brand etc?
Ive read all bout the ghosting stuff in games except for some of the newer ones where this isnt a problem, just wondering if you'd had success with yours?

I have a Philips 15" 150P 15" TFT LCD XGA Colour Monitor. The multimedia base came with a audible hum (ground loop) even at negligable volume. Was fixed under warranty though. I play a lot of Battal! It's ok for the most part, but I have found playing against good enough players that they will have a slight advantage in reaction times due to the screens slower response. This drawback is more than balanced by the MASSIVE real estate saving on my desk!
I'd never go back to CRT but I wish my LCD was a wee bit faster, hehe ;)

Sort of on the same topic... What would a good/average/slow reponse time be generally speaking?
I'm looking at this samsung lcd which has a 25ms response and I have no idea if thats good or bad

most people tend to say 16ms is a good response time to look for in an lcd screen (make sure that is for both the rise and the fall, some manufacturers like to bend the specs a lil).
that said, like mazer i have a 25ms (or so) lcd screen, and i wouldn't go back to a crt, even for gaming. i'm not a hard core gamer by any stretch, but i don't see any major difference in the speeds of the screens. one thing i would say is that if you watch a lot of movies, the crt's are still a bit sharper though. still, the real estate saved is just huge though.

prefer a CRT atm myself being a game enthusiast, or used to be, but the Direction 15" have a 20ms responce i believe and are from $450-550
Well ive done a bit of research lately and ive been looking at both 16ms and 20ms screens.
The two main contenders are the
Hyundai Q17 17" and the 4 bout $900
DiamondView (mitsubishi) DV-172 17" 4 $1055
The hyundai has a 20ms response and the diamondview a 16ms one, but apparetnly different manufacturers use different measurment tools so the difference between these two is debatable.
I still think ill go with the hyundai from what ive read. But am still very interested in peoples experiences with LCDs in general.

I personally am looking very closely at the Samsung 172X which at 12ms is the best pixel rate you'll find.
* goes to check bank balance once again.
Ive read that the 172x was crap and the 12ms rating was completely wrong, just type it in google and you'll see reviews.

I was sitting next to NTblowz at A4 and he had a magnificent Samsung LCD
Not sure on the model, was either a 152 or 172 something or other.
Was watching him play gunmetal and nfs and it was as good as my CRT :)
Impressed is an understatement.
Hopefully he can let us know the model number :)

it was a Samsung 152T ( i was sitting opposite :) )
So, that considered, you might want to check out the Samsung 172T (the 17" version). soven's got one, but i haven't seen it yet, and he's in malaysia at the moment, so can't comment ;)

If the numbers are to be believed, how about
http://www.ezonecomputers.co.nz/ezonesite2/productdetail.php?productid=300114&typegroupid=11
AOC LM721A 17" LCD MONITOR 17" VIS, TFT LCD VESA, XGA, SVGA, VGA Compatible EPA Energy Star VESA 75 Hz Preset Refresh Rate OSD control 1280 x 1024 Resolution.
16ms response time.contrast ratio of 450:1.
Is this a dog, or the sniff of a value deal?

The monitor's specs from the .pdf file on the AOC website fail to help, it simply states "Response time: 16ms"
Whether that is total or just half of it isn't made known.
I have the 17" Viewsonic VP171B Professional which I am more than happy with.
16ms - great contrast, brightness and colour. From all the info I could dig up on the net, it performs a lot better motion wise to the Samsung 172X, and if memory serves me right, the 172X had better colour but sucked compared to the VP171B in games.
The VP171B looks damn sexy with its very thin edge and the screen is height adjustable and can be swiveled into portrait view.
Playing fast games like ut2k3 and quake 3 is just like playing on a CRT, no ghosting at all.
it's pretty expensive though $1200 - $1300
Remember that ms ratings arn't everything, some 20ms LCD's outperfom 16ms LCD's so you really have to do a lot of research on the model you intend to buy.
A pic of the VP171B so that you can drool over :)

I too have a Samsung 152T. Superb - no apparent ghosting, I mainly play BF, no Quake3. Will never, ever go back to a CRT.
Go for the 172T IMHO :)

From what I have seen, samsung does make the best lcds, and seems to me to be the most honest about it's pixel rise/fall times.
Anyway, having seen a samsung 152t (25ms) next to an aoc (16ms), I must say in that comparison, the samsung had LESS ghosting. Though on both monitors ghosting was confined to high speed moving places like running down a spiral staircase in ET.

yea that one is sweet best LCD ive seen, if i wanted an LCD and had the money thats what id want, seen them at a Dove supplier expo night, very cool
This is great feedback :)
Regarding the samsung 152T, apparently this and the 19" version are very very good screens although the 17" didnt live up to the same standards. Although this is only what ive read, im now having a look into the viewsonic sounds like a nice screen :)
I have a 19" AOC crt monitor at the moment and to begin with it was an excellent screen especially cause it cost less than $400 at the time, but it now has a problem with yellow. EVery so often sometimes all the time the screen will flash yellow and sometimes reside to a very deep yellow, only way to fix it is to hit it on the top of the screen and it disapears, im gona claim warrenty on it, and hopefully sell the new replacement, and get a lcd.
So im not gona consider the AOC lcd for that reason, although i see it advertised with the title "gamer recomended" what ever that means or how it came to be.
Heres where i read about the Samsung 172X
http://www4.tomshardware.com/display/20031105/lcd-17.html
At the same link there is a review on the viewsonic 171B, me thinks i miht get this screen now :)
yea the Samsung 172X sucks big time, the only thing going for it is colour reproduction, everything else is only 1 star out of 5.
great if you wanna look at static images but unusable if you wanna play games and watch movies.
In most of the tests the viewsonic is 5 out 5.
A good thing to also note about the Viewsonic is they offer a 14 day bad pixel return which is pretty good, if you find it has one dead pixel you can get it swapped no questions asked, then after the 14 days you have the normal 3 year warranty.

I got mine from dove, good thing with dove is they price match and you can quite often get them to cut a good deal with ya :)
Can i ask what model it was and what price u paid?
Ascent is cheapest place ive found for the viewsonic 171B, but it isnt listed on pricespy which is weird.
Ascent seems to be the cheapest price ive found too.
Pricespys lowest price was $1326 from DTC.
You could email StylesPC to see if they can better the price, although it's not listed on the site, I know John can get them in.
I paid wholesale for mine so can't disclose the price sorry.
Thanks, will check styles pc out :)

I am very happy with my hitachi 17"screen
it should be noted that an lcd does take a while to warm up properly and that in the first few minutes of use it will have a lower responce time than once its warmed up.

pretty good overall but obvously crt's will still be better for gaming, but as far as lcd's pretty decent maybe a little bit too bright but no motion blurring

Hey guys,
Harvey Norman have the Polyview CMV CT722A 17" LCD for $749 incl. GST at the moment.
Any opinions on this one? I wen to the store earlier and watched some of a movie, and played a bit of Halo. It seemed great but I don't really have anything to compare it to.
Here's the stats:
Contrast ratio 450:1
Response time: 16ms
Not much time to decide on this one as Harvey Normans 12 month no interest and deferred payment scheme ends today.
Any advice?

That price is a ripoff for 20 dollar cheaper you can buy the same screen with digital input from elsewhere. But otherwise its a great lcd. the cmv ct-722 that is.
Well ive got a 17" Philips 107s CM6800 while my crt gets repaired, will let ya know how it is with games, im ordering the CMV 17" in a few days, any user reports on the CMV?
Well i got a new AOC crt 19" under warrenty which is great!
And i bought the CMV 17" LCD screen yesterday for $720, and its damn great, looks bloody excellent, great viewing angle compared to the philips i tried.
For games its great also, although ive only tried it on battlefield and splinter cell. Gona try it on Call of Duty soon, which ive heard blurs a few LCD screens.
But im happy and richer too as its so cheap :)
and duel monitors are wicked :)

Is it the CT-722D you got(black or silver)? Hows the general build and whats it like with fast moving fps games?
Cant find any reviews on hardware sites or other forums so would be good if you or anyone else with this monitor can post a review as the specs look good enough for an upgrade from crt.
Also if you know which panel it is (optronics, hyundai etc) :)

Yea tried all over, only place that does in depth reviews is tomshardware. www.lcdreview.com needs to be set up as im always coming across guys looking for reviews on the latest lcds, a severe lack of them for some reason.
Well ive tried it with black hawk down, splinter cell, battle field and there has been absolutly no sign of ghosting what so ever.
I got the silver and blue one, as i didnt want a black one.
Its nice and sturdy it tilts only up and down, not side to side. Has digital and analog controllers and speakers, which arnt worth using :) but they are hardly notcible anyway.
I highly recomend this LCD screen, its bright, defines colours very well, no ghosting in games so far, all FPS, and its much cheaper than all the rest.
