Just thought I'd let some of you know in case you didn't already that some drives, like the HP 8x writers are made with sone drive internals. HP don't offer a firmware upgrade, but sony do, and so you can turn you HP into a 12x and it will show in your bios and windows as a sony drive.

You can also do this with some other drives, just do a search for firmware updates etc.

Grrr!!

Interesting.
I take it HPs are rebranded Sony's.

I hate rebrands. Why can't companies make their own stuff!

Because if they rebrand stuff they get a better reputation. As for a normal (non g33k) person if they saw a HP and a Aopen which do you think they would get. Even if the Aopen is far cheaper they would think the HP is better quality

At my old school someone had broken the CD tray on one of the computers. Made a lethal frisbee launcher at a massive 40X speed!

BTC drives are rebranded SONY's aswell, so the firmware upgrades for SONY drives should work for them too.......

This process IS hit and miss though. Some drives ( say, a 32X Y Brand ) are rebranded as several models, and some will make another speed grade, and some won't.

I believe the same things apply with dial-up modems ( for which a similar thing applied - some 36k's were fine at 56k ).

BE CAREFULL.

Thanks for the link :D

Those guys really know their stuff. Looks like I'm going to have to turn my 40125 into a 48125.... :D

BTW does anyone know where you can download the basic dos files as the disk I had them on got destroyed? Also, do you know if I could still do this if booting dos etc from cd-rom as my FDD packed it in after my son ha><0red it (yes... he is starting young :D)?

if you ask nicely on the cdfreaks forum someone should help you........

the best thing about what you are going to do is that it is 100% reversible even if you screw the flash ..... just make sure you read all the posts on OCing your cdrw and you should be sweet and dont forget to backup the firmware.........
