question is title
im looking to go to a small lan out in west auckland sometime soon. i dont want to go to A4 at this stage as im still new to the online/lan gaming thing

the way i see it . is it will give me a break from the insanity of life at home , to be able to play a game without hearing from the other end of the house "make me a coffee"

yours sincerely

Thanks to Chris he made a calender with all the upcoming LAN events in Auckland..

http://www.kungfoo.co.nz/alan

go to the Calendar Link.

edit: just checked the calendar out and there seem to be no Lan events before or after A4, so just a wait a week or two for CmdChris to update the site

bah, just come to a4, it dosen't matter in the slightest that you're new to things.

If you have any problems, OCNZ tends to be a helpful (opinionated) lot ;)

I agree with imdying's post, you sould seriuosly think about going to A4, because it would be a great intoduction into lanning.

Other lans to consider going to if you're out west is one in Swanson called The Lan (http://www.thelan.co.nz/) and it's run by a couple of great guys Trevor and Ferg. They usually have a lan going every weekend so it would be best to email/ICQ them to see whats happening.

As for the Fridge lan this Friday, it's a great lan for just rocking up to and plugging in and start playing games etc... it's probably not the best lan to go to if you're new to lanning though. However the Fridge lan do seem to consistantly pull the numbers to their lans with approx 50+ people.

a4.geeknz.net is where you need to go, signup and then go to the events page to signup for A4 itself.

ok A4 here i come (missus gave me permission :o )

next question i only have ut original and 2k3 , will have bf1942 by then , any other games i need to bring / recommended to buy (have no intention to play counter strike)

any ideas would be a great help also i have been reading the faq's and apparently i need a utp network card & utp cable is onboard lan utp?

i have had very little exposure to networking apart from runing a home network over a year ago

OMG!!!

Get:
Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory
America's Army

....they're both FREE games ( free to download, free to play, free to serve - FREE!! ), and they're both top-quality games to play too. I'd hazard the guess that both ( especially ET ) will get played continually at A4. So DON'T MISS OUT! ;)

Both are available on the JSG FTP so if you have jetstart/jetstream, you can get them at full speed:

ET:
ftp://203.96.92.93/pub/wolf/ET/
( wolfET.exe and the 1.02 patch needed )
AA:
ftp://203.96.92.93/pub/AA/
( armyops190.exe and 2.0 patch needed )

Any 100Mb network card will be fine. ( Disclaimer for pedantic's: I KNOW THERE ARE SUCH THINGS AS FIBRE NIC'S :p ) But if it's 100Mb, you WILL be fine ;).

BF and the UT's should do you just fine, you can either download AA/ET before coming like KJ said or grab them on the dc hub once you arrive (a bit quicker).

Anything else that gets played (generals, opflash, rallisport etc) can be found on the above hub as well

The A4 team will be having a server dedicated for the latest game patches and i am sure they will be happy to put any freely available games on the server as well.

When you get to A4 and have connected to the network go to the intranet by typing http://intranet in your web browser. There should hopefully be a link somewhere on the intranet pointing you to the server with the game patches on it.

If that fails, just ask one of the other OCNZ members if they have either Americas Army or Wolf:ET on cd
