I don't know if it's a POS, but www.pp.co.nz has an internal "Turbocomm" modem that's only $96. I have to say I've used a small range of adsl modems and the difference I've seen is negligible as long as you tweak your settings ;)
The cheapest external I've seen is $247 also from www.pp.co.nz
As far as an FTP I think most ISP's frown on that BIG time.

i've got both the turbocomm and the nokia ni200...they both use the itex chipset, and on anyone elses pc, go like a dream.
on my pc, both modems install just fine, albiet as an isdn modem, but thats how they are meant to apparently...and i have no issues with them...BUT...if i reset the pc, i have to uninstall the cards, and reinstall them for them to work. i think windows may delete the ppp protocol or some sh!t, and so i have to re-add the protocol by fully reinstalling the card.
anyway, for $50-60 each, i shouldnt expect much :)
look on trademe, someone is always selling them cheap.
also, i would recommend the d-link somethingsomethingsomething 504 model router...its external, 4 ports 100mb with uplink...all good :)
a bit expensive however...$400-500 or something :( i iwill get one one day

I am currently using a nokia Ni500 being lent to me from a mate...... works fine... but no pinholing so a server is out of the question.
My mate is selling it for $210 if interested......

Agent666, they (Ni500) were going for $197 new at DSE, and I may pick one up from TradeMe for closer to $150, but if he still has it and is a bit flexible with price, we (the collective g33kflat) may like to purchase it from him.
Wont we Ra ("moan moan moan, we missd out on the best deal ever" *sob blubber*) ?

The Nokia N1122 (get the version without the hardware prob) is excellent, pinholes however are a b!tch to setup ...
