i need a cd-rw asap, i was going to go for the aopen but it will probably take a while to come in.. wondering if anyone has one of these btc writers?
Grrr!!

Not with that particular writer, but a 16X of my friends is seriously a POS. I don't like BTC at all, but this drive chews CDs and makes them into Coasters as if that is what it was designed for.

AFAIK, BTC's are just rebranded Sony's.
Check out www.starlyte.co.nz for good prices on both LiteOn and ASUSTek CDRW's.

and go with one of the A-open brands I reccommend them.
A-OPEN 40x/10x/40x CD Rewriter $179.00 INC GST
now thats a good price, anyway read some reviews and get an idea of what is the best brand to buy.

Yes it's a 40X, and yes it's $50, and yes it's new with warranty - BUT I WON'T BE ABLE TO COPY MY PRECIOUS SAFE DISK 2!!!!
Mine's a BTC 16X ( not listed there ). I've burnt 2 coasters ( at the start when I was trying to work out what worked properly, but since then I've burnt approximately 70 CDs - and no coasters.
Meh! If it's cheap, fast enough, and comes with warranty I wouldn't worry. The only things with ub3r protection are things like Windows disks - the things that if they break you can just get a new one, so meh!! :D

My point exactly KJ.
In most cases, if you are needing to copy a safe disc 2 CD then it is likely that it is something that you shouldn't be doing anyway.
It's not like these people are going to back up their assignments and hte like with safe disc 2 ;)

i have but not much at all is said about the noise factor which is my primary concern.
I'm looking at either the lg 40x12x48x @$179 or the Aopen 40x12x48x @$179
they are both good, my concern here is which isn't going to make that horrible grinding engine noise that i despise so, when reading cd's.

I have the Aopen, and it's pretty quiet, espically when compared to 52x drives. It actually has someting called smartspeed if that the name. It restricts it's read speed to 40x unless you hold the open/close button for 5 seconds, that releases the 48x. Next time you boot it's back to 40x, and it works too.

Yeah I have the Aopen 4048 as well good drive, but don't really know what the point of the extra speed boost is, really. I never use it, is there any real difference between 40x and 48x anyway?

Me three, I have the AOpen drive aswell. Nice drive, quiet, fast and reliable. I don't understand the point of the 'speedboost' function either, actually I haven't even used 'speedboost' as yet....... But I reckon there will be arse all difference between 40x and 48x.

Me has one of those as well.
I tried to use the speedboost function but all it did was spit the CD out at me. - maybe I need to upgrade the firmware to the supporting one.
But I must say that burning at 40x sure is good after the 8x

Good though, keeps them quiet. If someone really complains about speed, then they can turn it on. I don't think it would make bugger all of a difference.

Hmmm. I burnt one disc with my new 48x Aopen, then it just stopped working. I'm plraying its an out of box failure, cause I have no idea how to fix it if its a conflict....
