If you are anything like me this thread (http://www.icronticforums.com/showthread.php?threadid=29622) will be of interest for you :)
Please be more specific with you "best os" question.
Windows 2000 pro, xp, NT etc are great for some things, linux, freebsd etc are great for other things.
It really all boils down to personal preference, knowledge and compatibility.

what do you want to use it for?
what do you rate your computer knowledge as? beginner, intermediate, advanced, expert, guru?
what devices do you have? What is their open source support status?
too many variables, too many opinionated idiots ready to argue on this topic.
This is a thread that could easily boil down to the same bill gates vs lunix debate, which has been going on forever, and will go on forever, because people tend to get out of control with their opinions and their ability to respect other people's opinions.
different strokes for different folks, for me
microsoft OS: win2k
open source: openBSD

I like your choices... ;)
I love openBSD
Small, Secure and the ports tree is a life saver. Only now are some linux distros using a BSD style port tree for installing software :)

I'm not really a MS fan but have a duel boot PC that can boot to either WinXP or Linux .. Redhat 7.2. There are things I like and dislike about both systems and I believe that Linux may be made more secure than can any WinXX system .. imo of course :) Mozilla, the Redhat default browser these days, can work quite hapilly without java making it faster and less HDD cluttering than the WinXX counterpart.
With Linux you can tinker with absolutely anything that comprises the system, something that is not available with Winxx despite all the tweaking utils available. With Linux you get a C++ compiler and tools to interface most code that is available for this platform. Most importantly its free! When you get cryptic error messages from Winxx and enquire from MS you most often draw a blank. If you get errors with Linux then imo, the provider usually responds with something sensible.
If you have heaps of HDD space why not try a duel system?

The boot manager for Linux resides in the master boot block so if you use fdisk /mbr after booting from DOS then it should fix the problem. From my own experience its a great idea to have your working partiton backed up just in case! I don't use the Linux boot manager for a number of reasons but use instead a tiny utility called SBM .. smart boot manager which is freeware and uses the master boot record, is secure and reliable. SBM comes in flavours to load under DOS, Winxx or Linux.

is it XP Pro or home?
I think from what people here have said possibly win2k, although it depends on drivers quite a bit, E.G if you only have native win9x drivers, then win9x will be better. So look at what hardware/drivers you have, or can get easily, but most probably win2k or XP pro
