Maybe this is a stupid question, but what exactly are the detonator drivers for?

I installed the VIA4in1 drivers and the standard drivers supplied with my Leadtek GF4 ti4200 card.

Do I need to install the Detonator drivers?

Thanks.

IF you have a graphics card with the chip made by nVIDIA.

This includes the following cards:

TNT
TNT2
GeForce256 series
GeForce2 series
GeForce3 series
GeForce4 series
Quadro series
Quadro2 series
Quadro DCC
Quadro4 series
nForce series

For cards made by ATi ( Radeon, Rage, Fury series cards ), matrox ( G400, G450, G600 series etc ) or other manufacturers, you will need to download drivers from their site.

First you need to understand that Nvidia doesn't actually make retail video cards themselves, they make the chipset, reference design and reference drivers... companies like Gainward and Leadtek accquire the right to use the reference design buy the nvidia chips and they arrange to get cards made under their brand name by a one or two of the very large taiwanese chip fabs/foundries.

With that in mind... often companies will make custom modifications to the reference design, eg: using a different brand of tv in/out encoder chip, the company then needs to take the reference drivers from nvidia and alter them to suit there changes. In the past Abit and Asus cards have done this on their cards and the tv in/out functions of their video cards haven't worked well with the nvidia reference drivers. So you'd get the drivers from the asus or abit site.

Now moving on to present day....

Most vid card makers just follow the reference design and generally the current official nvidia reference drivers (available from nvidia.com) are the fastest most up to date and bug free drivers to use. Gainward and Leadtek generally include the latest driver at the time of packaging with the vid card. As time passes it's better to move to using the latest nvidia detonator (reference drivers)

Basically with 99% of nvidia based cards you've better off using the latest drivers available from the nvidia site. If you run into problems try the drivers from the card manufacturer's site.
