Open Office is always free (and with no innoying paper clips!) :p
Although you can always sell it on ebay ;)
man, why didn't anyone tell me this,
my friend comes to uni this morning and goes, oh, I just got free office from DSE and sold it off 2 hours later for $600, and I'm like WTF,
someone, if you see this sort of thing in the future, do tell me.
just look at trademe, it's full of them for sale:

anyone in chch that has a free copy of Office 2003 pro legit retail and wants some cash.. right now? $$$$ paid in cash..
msn me daniel@tobiaz.net
must be in the next 30min
Well, I got my copy  .
A few months ago I was given a free copy of xp pro as well. I'm stoked :p
Tho i'm not sure about the on selling thing. They take your name, email and adress down when you pick it up. Doesn't that affect giving it to someone else?

Dam this is very annoying. I never hear about these things until later on in the day when they are selling it. The same thing happened for me for XP.
Dam I could make alot of money selling it. grrrr...

If it was anything like XP and the DSE store I had visited the staff got family/friends to show up to work at the same time, they became the 'customers' and were hadnded out before the doors were opened to the 'normal' public that only heard about it on the morning radio promos. As long as it wasnt the staff themselves. Talking to 1 staff member from up north on IRC recently that admitted he got their neighbour in for them at the time staff are there since it was his day off.
Exploitation sucks balls. Its like the lotto commission buying their family tickets with the next nights numbers (if that scenario was even possible) to keep it in the system.
.. whats more they are now looking at hocking it off for $200-$900 considering they can buy at staff anyhoo.

if you are at university (or most polytechs) most of them are members of the microsoft academic alliance.
what this means is that students are entitled to use (ie borrow from the library) windows XP pro, and about $3000 worth of microsoft development software (visual studio c++, everything else that comes with it, SQL servers, etc etc) to run on it, all for free.
Its so that microsoft will make all the computer science students go 'hey whats that linux thing again, i forget, cos i have all this free microsoft stuff1!', and then when you graduate, you will be dependent on all the proprietary ms libraries, and so begins your dependency on MS development tools when you enter the workforce.
Its like the first shot of heroin is always free :P
My friends all borrowed the cds from the library, so have upgraded to windows XP pro for free, as well as being able to use MS Visual Studio and all that which comes along with it
I havent borrowed it yet, im using windows 98 type-R, and dev-C++ seems to work fine........well its not as good as MS visual studio
Has anyone used both Dev-Cpp and MS visual studio? obviously the free one will be missing some features that the MS has, but are they very good? Ive been able to do a lot of my c projects at home ok
but it dont work with java; i use x emacs on windows for that :P
(sry for thread jack, but its kinda the same.......:P)

Yep, I have a hell of a suite thanks to that agreement.
Think -> Office 2003, Visual Studio.NET, Windows Server 2003, and all sorts of other stuff.
Grrr!!

xplod, NO. the only moderator action taken as a result of something you do will be that of you being banned.
the events forum is at present a stupid idea, you were told that last time you tried to float it, so drop it.
you've been spamming pathetic drivel all day, so you've got a two week suspension for your troubles.

pie, dont imply anything along those lines... we're trying to keep this forum respectable...
Back to topic.
I checked out with my head of course at Uni and it turns out I can't get that free software. The reason being this: even tho, they pay license fees for visual studio, windows and all the other stuff, MS expects them to pay an extra $2000 for the department to become a part of the msdnaa. Basically, they said no, we are not paying another 2k$ to MS so our students can get the software free at home when they can use it at uni anyway.
Quite sad really, :(
I'm gonna contact Microsoft now, cause they put up 3 posters on each noticeboard on each floor of the building promising the free software.  :D

as far as i know, the computer science department is able to :P
what department are you in?
I think recently, they recieved upgraded cds
But you still have to sign a contract if you want to borrow it.

I'm assuming you're talking about Auckland Uni. As far as I know all the software is available to Infomation Systems students. I know a guy from Compsci who got a copy of Visual Studio .Net 2003 recently too... (legally from the department I mean)
oh, yeah, I'm at AUT, doing BE - electrical. We use Visual for C++.
I'll ask around some more.
