i would think that too,

but for example, what about that DRV5 going secondhand for 160$? or is it already sold?

or something like this: CHAINTECH 7VJDA KT266A $200.00 INC GST

I know which ISN'T the best - the one with 'Shuttle' written on the box.... teeheheheh... :D

The Asus has some cool features ( ATA-133, 6-channel sound ), and some lame features ( SDR + DDR :p, it's got an ALi chip :p ).

The Abit board lacks the cool features. But it lacks the bad features. No sound or ATA133, but no sh*t ALi drivers, and better performance ( plus it's Abit! :D ).

Interestingly enough, the Shuttle is the middle road. It lacks ATA133, but has sound ( though only AC97 ). It has a VIA chipset - with DDR and SDR support ( not sure how this chipset performs ). The bad side to this board being that it's a Shuttle. A lot of etailers don't sell Shuttle anymore - for good reason....

So if you want sound, go Asus. Otherwise, go Abit. IMHO, anyways... :)

Have you checked out the ASUS A7S333? I personally don't know much about it, except that is has an SiS745 chipset and it has onboard sound 6-Channel CMI chip, 3 DDR slots, and 5 PCI slots.

More details here: http://www.asus.com.tw/mb/socketa/a7s333/overview.htm

It's only about $220 incl GST.

avoid ALi like the plague. their IDE controllers especially suck. my pcmark 2k2 score for my barracuda IV's doubled when i moved from a KA266+ (ALI sbridge) to a GA7DXR+ (VIA sbridge). the GA7DX+ is a good board btw but not exactly leading edge technology.

of the ones you first mentioned i would certainly take the Abit. the Asus board humantuckshop mentioned looks good too :)
