Pretty good speed tester,

This is what I got running on 56k on clear with other browsers, ICQ, MSN,

(I'm having to retype this post again cause I lost it cause the forum can't keep me logged in  )

Your raw speed was 93703.17 bits per second.
*shrugs*
I think it is rather innacurate.....

First shot I got 1.5Mbits *looks at 56K winmodem* I think that was cos of going through a proxy.

*tries again*

5.1K, that's better.

Weird - the low-speed test gives me around 9.5kB/s while the high-speed verison gives around 12kB/s  .

...so I demand an ULTRA high-speed version - LOL.

I'm on InSPire ADSL 128kb ( 16kB/s ) up and down BTW.

BTW, there are 1MB and larger test files of random data on the jetstreamgames.co.nz ftp server for bandwidth testing. And I get closer to 15-16kB/s there, so I don't think that tester is the most accurate. Especially given Binky's low score....

( Yes, that IS a low score :D )

Check you out www.nzdsl.co.nz/speedtest

Its quite good, the output graphics are not as flash but they tell the tale.

I get 15.1k on T/C cable, just about perfect for a 128k link. At tech i get about 60k and lincoln uni i got 24k.

hmhm but sub 20 pings on the paradise games servers was a nice treat for the switch from ADSL to cable..

And now back to downloading freeware :)

CrazySurfaNZ
15-06-2002, 10:53 PM
hahaha, but as far as dialup goes, those arent bad results... what type of modem are you using?

Antallica
15-06-2002, 10:55 PM
Lucent Winmodem (hehe :D) Can't escape winmodem

My trusty Paradise.net connection @ 53.3Kb/s

CrazySurfaNZ
15-06-2002, 10:56 PM
Jeez thats really good from a winmodem... back in tokoroa where i come from i could get 6k/s on downloads with my dynalink voicedesk 56 pro... but my brother got a new winmodem and can only get like 4 k/s so thats kinda stink.

Antallica
15-06-2002, 10:59 PM
I've had 2 winmodems so far, one many years old (got fried by some packet happy irc chatter, trust me it don't work) but before that happened I was kicking 52,000bps connections via ZFREE.

R.I.P - ZFREE (I never got disconnected once nor ever had any problems, dunno what everyone else was on :D)

CrazySurfaNZ
15-06-2002, 11:22 PM
never got to use a free ISP :( but E3 (http://www.e3.net.nz) always worked fine for me and pretty cheap while theyre at it!

argh, my mates results (and he's in a bloody rural area too!!! but had a new line installed. puts mine to shame hehe)

Once again, Lucent Winmodem

Geek4Life
15-06-2002, 11:29 PM
That was a really good score on dial up there.

And yeah, Zfree rocked. It was so much quicker than anything else.

say, anyone know anything about fax lines????, I hear they are only $10/month (data only lines of course) I want one

CrazySurfaNZ
15-06-2002, 11:39 PM
Yeah those results there... have to make you wonder whether jetstart is worth it... wouldnt mind taking a look at walker wireless tho.. sounds like the best value high speed internet solution i reckon :)

Fax lines... interesting.. i wonder would they be limited at all... given that most modems in faxes only transmit at 14.4 kbps?

Geek4Life
15-06-2002, 11:40 PM
Faxability can be had for ~$3 per month.

Antallica
15-06-2002, 11:40 PM

Ultra has gotten much slower in the last year - it sucks.
And we are on the old plan, they have cap of 2g and have taken
away the 2g snap-on - i think they want us to convert to the newer plans which cost even more :(

Unfortunately KJ i dont tend to play many games online... the games i like such as starcraft for example ... just dont seem to work... im not sure what it is... might be due to the NAT that happens with the Nokia router not sure... but its not my set up.. (im boarding at someones house for the year) so i have no power to change anything... and now with the cap i cant even leave my computer downloading miscellaneous tv episodes... so yeah... my host was thinking of changing to telstra cable cept he doesnt want all the hassle of changing isp... and getting new installation etc. etc..

heres another, from my course at CCC (http://www.ict.school.nz)

were using Jetstream, but its shared with 40 pc's so could be alot higher depending on who's using the net right now.

still not bad:)

now if only that kinda bandwidth was affordable to the average joe..................:(

2 much thinking
17-06-2002, 05:29 PM
i did the test at home and only got 11.5Kbytes and did the one here (http://www.nzdsl.co.nz/speedtest/) and got 15.3Kbytes. it would be interesting to know how accurate they are but at least its pretty reasonable.

also from that website they have a registry entry that apparently gets that best out of windows configuration for broadband. is this true? would it really make a difference?

the only problem with playing games on the jetstream server is they have hardly any! and its never updated-only a couple of weeks ago they were still using C.S 1.3!!

Geek4Life

It all depends on where they are hosted and stuff like that. How many people are speed testing at once will also have a small effect.

5GB before I have to start paying extra for it 0.20c per Meg international 0.02c national

Antallica
22-06-2002, 12:32 AM
oohh nasty, that's gonna cost some green my friend

Gremlin
22-06-2002, 12:34 AM
You can get it a crap load cheaper if you go for a lower cap.

They seem to have quite a few "telstra" site as peers so if you look around for your downloads you can usualy find something that wont count towards the cap.

I'd say I down load crap loads and I rarely go over 5 - 5.5Gb a month. Only real times I have recently is when I was temporarily hosting some forums for some Americans so there was truck loads of international traffic.

Antallica
22-06-2002, 12:36 AM
That's quite true, I hardly see my self even using probably 2GB in a month. Then again the odd divx movie wouldn't help hehe

hmmm let me see:

2Mbps
2 * 60 = 120Mb (for 1 minute)
120 * 60 = 7,200Mb (for 1 hour)
7200 * 24 = 172,800Mb (for 1 day)
172800 * 28 = 4,838,400Mb (for ~1 month (well 28 days))

so
4838400 / 8 = 604800MB
604800 / 1024 = 590.625GB

Assuming that all traffic was international that would equate to $120,045.90

That is just the traffic charges, with the 5GB option.

NB: This does not include any of the uploading

I find the best way to measure bandwidth is to take a tape measure and measure from one side of the stage to the other.. This will give you the maximum possible bandwidth.

If an orchestra is playing, then you can calculate optimum bandwidth by counting the number of chairs. Since the average size of a chair is 2 foot in width.. If there are 20 chairs in a row, then your bandwidth will be 20 feet.

Pop bands are a little harder to measure coz they can fluctuate between using up all available bandwidth on the stage or hardly any at all.. You get demands on peak loading depending on how much they are leaping around.

Bandwidth is not very usefull for calculating throughput, since you can have a large bandwith with an orchestra, but they very seldom get 'though' many groupies.. However, a low bandwidth pop band can get through quite a lot of groupies - since they tend to network better.

So as you can see, in order to increase your networking abilities and raise your performance levels you need to go for higher throughput rather than simply increasing bandwidth.

Rock bands also experience experience a greater degree of packet loss. Drugs get taken, then the baggie gets lost...
