View Full Version : XP 2000+ no go @ 144 FSB?

Hey everybody, I've got a Soltek DRV4 with an XP2000+, but I just can't get the bugger to go up to 144 FSB, no matter how damn high I put any of the voltages. I keep getting memory errors at winXP boot (right before I would see the login screen), even if I put my DDR volt. up to 2.7 - btw it's Crucial PC2100, which was widely held to have REALLY good yields when I got it- but it just won't budge. I DON'T suspect any of the PCI cards as I only have two and they've never given me a problem before ( I had a 1.33 Tbird all the way up to 168 before). Heat is NOT an issue and the only two things I can think it might be is either:
1. I grabbed my cpu when they first came out, so I've just got a crappy stepping (not sure which, been a while since I took off the HSF). OR:
2. My memory is just too damn finicky to even think about 144 FSB.
What do ya thinks?

Well it shouldn't be the memory, Crucial PC2100 is pretty good stuff - especially the sticks that have Micron chips. Some of those have OC'ed past 180MHz FSB. :D

My guess would be the CPU, overclocking is also about luck, win some, lose some - maybe you did get a crappier stepping as you suggested. :(

That there XP needs some unlocking, it needs unlocking bad....... ;)

I have 512Mb of Crucial Reg. ECC PC2100 ( 2X 256MB sticks ).

It likes 175MHz...... :D

( is unstable at 180MHz though :( - and won't boot at 185 )

BTW, have you unlocked your CPU, or are you just slowly ticking up? Cos at 144MHz fsb ( 12.5 multiplier ), you'll be running 1800MHz.... which on stock cooling is probably not going to happen.....

Yes, I have the nice Crucial memory :D , and no I don't have it unlocked, but even at 140+ FSB it's not even breaking a sweat @ the mid-40's in my temps. Could it be that it doesn't want to be stable even though it's showing NO signs of going Chernobyl? I didn't think 140-150 fsb was THAT ambitious for an unlocked cpu?

Not unlocked and you're wondering why?

Cheapo Soltek mobo and you're wondering why?

I hate to break this to you, but.....

Solteks are ok if ur not after OCing.....
Which is what makes it perfect for me :D

bwahahahahahaha

PS: what IS your hs??

Well you have to think about the actual CPU speed. Sure a 140-150MHz FSB isn't that high but multiply that by 12.5x and you get CPU speeds of 1750MHz (approx) and 1875MHz (approx). You couldn't get your CPU stable @ 144 x 12.5X = 1800MHz (approx). I can understand it not liking that speed. Do you know what the CPU's stepping is?

XP's aren't the greatest overclockers in the world, you know. I had an XP1600+ that would not boot past 158MHz FSB and the XP1700+ i'm using right now won't boot with an FSB higher than 155MHz FSB. Unlocking solved that problem however. ;)

Sooooooo, your options at this point are:
1) Accept the fact that your CPU isn't a very good overclocker and get on with your life.
2) Unlock the CPU. ;)

Personally I would do the latter - but maybe that's just me being crazy.

BTW, are you running the CPU @ 1.85V? If not, do so. :D

Why do you people keep insisting on me facing this 'REALITY' thing!!
j/k! :D ;)
Yeah you're probably right, I guess I just want to be able to still be "wowed" with my (hard-earned money)cpu. :( Now, where did I put that conductive pen????
BTW
1. I have a Thermalright SK-6
2. I didn't think Soltek was a cheapo mobo when I bought it :(

Well my friend and I got his locked 1800+ happy at 143mhz (PR 1900+) but thats about it. This was also on a Soltek board, with RAM that is happy at 180mhz. I can only suggest breaking out the pen and tattooing that sucker.
