The draft report by the commerce commision is out and it says that NZ will see great benefit from unbundling of the local loop

http://www.comcom.govt.nz/telecommunications/localloop.cfm

There is a PDF of a few hundred pages explaining the process and the decision (I read the first few pages of the conclusion ;) )

oh and apparently they define broadband as "...data services at speeds in excess of narrowband speeds." (P163 para 682)

It is only a draft report, but it is the first step of a, no doubt, very long process

it's about time for a change,

I've read about 30 pages and I agree with most of it.

quite an interesting read if you have the time :)

While good in theory it still doesn't do much for ISP's who have to go through Telecom's "global-gateway" in order to access international servers...

I admit I haven't had the time to properly run through it yet, but from what I've read on IDG all that it's going to do in the long run is appease people who actually think that N.Z's internet is controlled at the exchanges...

I also don't think Telecom will be unbundling the loop in a hurry either...

i'm still having a chuckle on the bit where Telcom claimed ISDN lines don't carry data.
