The Geforce MX and Ti are differentiated by performance and cost, the MX range are generally for people on budgets who want meek performance at low cost (this is generally where not so known brands come about eg. Eagle, Pine etc.). The Ti ranges are where the buck is much more and the performance hit is excellent as opposed to a MX card.

i.e - My old Eagle Geforce2 MX200 has a core/memory speed of 175/166 (166 being the memory speed)
My Leadtek Geforce2 Ti has core/mem speed of 225/400 and will perform much better then my MX200 (also more overclockable as well)

As you can see the memory ratings on both cards show that my Ti is much faster than my MX200's speed. This will be much the same case when you look at GF4 MX and GF4 Ti .

Lower spec ram is avaliable on Ti cards, MX cards however have higher spec ram (possibly more dodgey ram as well) which explains slower performance when compared to any Ti. Anything under 4ns seems to be the norm these days, my MX200 has 6ns ram and my GF2 Ti has 4ns ram. The older tnt2's have around 7ns ram. The lower the better is generally the best (however ram quality on cards is my preferred choice..... better ram=better oc :D)

I am not familliar with memory ns ratings and how they come about on vid cards as somebody will eventually fill us both on.

As for the companies the only thing different is basically the usage of different ram brands (Hynix, Samsung etc.) Some not so known companies will use cheaper ram, this will mean that for example an Eagle GF4 Ti 4400 (yes they exist) will be much slower compared to a Leadtek GF4 or Gainward GF4.

Leadtek or Gainward are the best these days, I like Leadtek but something tells me that Gainward is a wiser choice. But in terms of GF4 MX and Ti, I'd get a MX from Leadtek and Ti from Gainward

If it's a family pc then I'd probably get a GF4 MX440 sounds good to me, they are still sweet as (rips my GF2 Ti up)

not to mention the archiecture is completely different....for example a GF4 TI has pixel shaders and a GF4 MX doen't, a GF2 TI has 4 rendering pielines, and a GF2 MX has 2

What games???? As mentioned above different games will use different features.... If you're gonna rock on with Aquanox, UT2003 etc then a GF3 or GF4 Ti is gonna be a good choice..... if you're gonna play CS then a GF4 MX would be the better choice ;)

yea, i would say a GF4 Ti4200 - quite cheap - $350ish, and that will keep u gaming for at least another few years.

Get LeadTek GF4Ti4200 64MB, they cost for $350 incl GST. GF4MX won't run Doom III properly even on 640 X480. (Carmack said that himself: never get a GF4MX for Doom III)

I'd wait for Gainward to release their GF4 Ti4200 with the 3.3ns ram. It supposed to overtake the Ti 4400's. I'm not sure about price but they should be cheap.

If your gonna get a gamers card then I reckon a 128mb one. They will be better in the long run.

But Gainward's card is not cheapest in NZ btw (Leadtek is)

And I am sure those GF256 with 64MB can run todays game very well...

GF256 is gonna be rather crap when Doom3 and any next generation game comes out, anyone with that card will be quite sad. Even me with my GF2 Ti ......... GF4 here I come.
