View Full Version : Upgrading from GF2MX to Ti4200

I'm thinking about upgrading from my current GF2MX to a Ti4200.

Question is, apart from more than doubling my 3Dmark score, is it worth on a Celeron @1ghz?

Thoughts?

Ideally, I'd like to run at 1024x768, 2xAA and have the use of a pixel shader :)

And since I mostly play FPS's, a frame rate increase would be a good thing, but it's actually not too shabby right now (Ghost Recon excepted).

Cheers,

Kryten

U would prolly be able to play everything @ 1024x 768x32 with 4xFSAA and antistripic filtering on, without ANY problems.. The celeron 1gig should be fine. It will be a small bottle neck, but not to much of a worry..

yep, the celeron is sweet,

if you go to tom's hardware, and look thru some stuff, sorry no link,
you will find that running at high res with the same VGA on different CPU's make no difference, only a couple of frames advantage say if you had a 1.4 instead of 1GHz.

And since the GF4 is so powerful, you will be able to enjoy high res graphics.

I say go for it

I have just had a 64mb Leadtek ti4200 arrive - its sitting on my desk.

My system is not really that fantastic - Durrie @ 1350, 256SDR with a powercolor MX. I must say that its fine for any game - but I really wanted to buy something, and I got a big enough bonus that I could throw away some money on a graphics card.

I am going to do the full format, and then have a bit of a play. I hope its worth it.

I'll let you know - but ATM the only really modern game I have is JK2, but I'll be throwing MOHAA, Max Payne and a few others at it in the next week or two.

I got Ti4200 today! and it so awesome! (cost me $349 + GST) I just remove my GF2ti and install the Ti4200 alone with new driver from nVidia. And everything is so smooth... (I got 8GB left from my 40GB hdd)

With Morrorwind the water effect is very good! so as with 8X aniso and quincux AA, which really kick ass!

If you're a [H]ardc0r3 FPS playa like me, then you NEED THOSE FRAMES!

Heh - I'm on an Athlon 1.33 ( @ whatever my mood is at the time ), 512MB DDR, and a Radeon7500 - and I still play 800x600x16 in all my games! And I upgraded from an MX where I played in 800x600x16.....

....framerates are addictive dude. You'll upgrade, push up the eyecandy, come second score on a server, shove down the eye candy, top score a few times, and the eye candy'll stay down.... :D :D

Trust me, ATM you'll be mainly GPU limited - so a Ti4200 will most definately help. Of course, in my case I play mainly RTCW, which is a very CPU limited game - so even with my Athlon I'm probably equally CPU and GPU limited now.

Besides, there's all that wank factor with the Ti's..... ;)

no aa and getting constant 125 fps

but when aa is turned on (4x)

u loose about 100 fps... and ive heard ghost recon is a pretty hard out fps sucker so.. yeah

Just to let you know - I have had a fun afternoon playing with the new toy.

I have got 8650 3dmarks - with overclocks but no tweaks. Mipmap adjustment should give a little more etc. Seems to top out around 305/600 or so.

Its fun - took me a while to get it going well, but it seems pretty good. Some gaming tonight I think...

Nice score DS, what was your old score at?

I'm getting 2850, which is not bad considering my current card can't do some of the tests :(

I hit about 3200 with my poo old mx - clocked at 220c/192m.

I have the fastest Durrie ti4200 combo by about 500 points at the moment. Obviously I am the only loser Durrie owner rich enough to buy a ti4200 lol

The only project that I have published is this one: http://service.madonion.com/compare?2k=2419828

EDIT:

Whoops - I didn't check all OS - only win98. I am about sixth or so... Ahh well

Maybe I could play with mipmap levels.... I can't imagine myself hitting more then 9000 or so, so whats the point?
